interesting, winner take all to get into "the real playoffs" and the As are going with a bullpen game with Edwin Jackson as the only starter on their wild card roster...

I fucking love this...this could blow up in their faces but talk about throwing the yankees off by having to face probably 6-8 different pitchers throughout the night...

GBCP, were you the author of the Oakland takes out Yankees then Sawks theory? It was posted a long time ago - very sharp prediction.

Yeah, as a bettor it’s Oakland +185 or nothing and I’m a Yankees guy.

Who knows what kind of Severino shows up. Frankly, Judge & Stanton for that matter. It’s trick or treat.

Price and Kershaw choking in playoffs is one of the cornerstones of PFA but Severino was literally hyperventilating during the playoffs last year.

Severino is still like 22. He has been great then awful and good again over the course of the season. He has admitted to losing emotional control. Talks about writing the word “Patience” on the underside of the bill of his cap and looking at it from time to time.

He also talks about watching a 9 minute mixed tape of Kershaw pregame. I’m joking. He watches video of Pedro Martinez punching out batters for inspiration. Kid needs to settle down.

Could really be a home run derby in the Bronx bandbox. That right field fence suits the A’s perfectly. The A’s also are a better road team actually than home.

Gonna pass on the over though. Not laying juice on a crapshoot. Take the A’s ML if you are a professional

think that was snake's theory since he had them to win the west...

kinda surprised they didn't go with tanaka tonight...when I have time to recover like in a 7 game series, don't mind throwing severino out there to hopefully set the tone...but in a one game playoff, I think it's tough to embrace that much volatility...

You know, maybe I feel some empathy because of my recent health problems, but I just cant kick you while you're down here.

I felt bad for the Cubs. Finished the first 162 games tied for the best NL record. Had to face a tough Brewers team in the 1-game playoff. Fought for 13 innings to avoid being sent home by the Rockies.

Watching that game last night, I kept thinking that I actually felt bad for the team and the fans of the one which would ultimately lose.

With that said, the Cubs choked not one but TWO one-game playoffs at HOME, and scored one run each time. So that's pretty dreadful.

I know this looks like a hindsight 20/20 thing, but I always got the impression from the Cubs offense that it was feast or famine. Like, this didn't seem like too much of surprise. Pitching definitely did its job, but the bats were asleep.

In order of the 4 potential playoff opponents regarding how much they scare me when playing the Dodgers:

    Brewers
    Cubs
    Braves
    Rockies

I think the Dodgers generally have the Rockies' number this year.

Anyway, I'm glad the Cubs are out for that reason.

Might attend Friday's NLDS game 2 if I feel good enough and the prices are low enough. That traffic going to the stadium during Friday rush hour will be bruuuuuuuuutal though.

That was my theory. I was hoping this game was in Oakland because that stadium is so depressing, especially for the visiting teams. Khris Davis is going to put one in the seats tonight and so will Piscotty.

Cubs either score 10 or none. They were the most frustrating 94 win team ever to watch day in and day out.

Sanlmar loves to hate on Kershaw, so he'll enjoy this post.

I don't feel that the Kershaw hate was justified in prior years. He's even been better in the postseason than his reputation would lead one to believe. Much of his postseason struggles have been due to lack of faith in Dodgers bullpens, thus causing managers to leave him in too long. Some also involved single-inning struggles after an otherwise good performance. He's also pitched some quality games on short rest, as well as come on in relief on short rest, and gotten the job done. He wasn't a Bumgarner-like postseason hero, but he's not the postseason goat that Sanlmar wishes he was.

However, I don't have faith in the 2018 version of Kershaw. He's not the same pitcher. Not sure if it's wear on his body, after-effects of the injuries, or both, but he's no longer dominant and unhittable. While it's become fashionable to hate on Kershaw and fawn over Walker Buehler, I have to admit that I'd rather give the ball to Buehler in a critical game than Kershaw.

The Dodgers are, unfortunately, a two-dimensional team right now.

They hit a lot of home runs. Every player in the lineup can hit it out. So that can sting a pitcher who makes the occasional mistake. He can't just bear down upon the middle of the lineup and relax. That's where the Dodgers shine. 7 guys hit 20 or more this year, and that doesn't include Turner (injured half the year) or Machado (hit 38 overall, but came to the Dodgers late). Half the games were at Dodger Stadium, which isn't an easy park for home runs. They still led the NL in HR.

But that's all the Dodgers can do offensively. They can't manufacture runs, have little speed, and were the worst clutch-hitting team in MLB (seriously).

Their other dimension is good-but-not-great pitching. They have a number of good starters. They have a decent but not great bullpen. Kenley Jansen isn't right, and I get nervous now when he gets the ball.

Bottom line is that this team might homer its way into a championship, but the 2017 version was a far more complete and balanced team. This one just cranks out home runs, and you pray that the pitching is good enough to hold up.

Also, they've gotta play Max Muncy more.

He's not good defensively, and he strikes out a lot. But the guy cranks out a lot of home runs, including in the clutch. And he actually walks a lot. He sees a ton of pitches. You need someone like that in the postseason.

He homered in 7.3% of his plate appearances in 2018 (I think that's best in baseball). He walked 16.4% of the time. He struck out 27% of the time. So 50% of the time, you're getting one of three true outcomes with him. More than 50% of his hits were for extra bases! His OBP is .391.

For whatever reason, Dave Roberts isn't high on Muncy, and he keeps finding reasons to sit him. I could easily see Muncy regressing and becoming a failplayer in 2019 and beyond, but right now you have to ride his power stroke and ability to take walks.

they said this on baseball tonight last night...cubs might have too much of a good thing...guys just don't get consistent at bats because maddon can interchange all these different parts and play happ at 2b one day, give him the next day off, play him at CF on day 3, etc...think they're right...tough to get into a rhythm playing sporadically like that...

Dodgers thoughts that will keep Druff up at night.

Dodgers team defense is awful. That’s not hyperbole. They are ranked 26th out of 30.

The old sage, “defense wins championships” still applies

The Dodgers were 12th last year.

There are a lot of one dimensional lumbering oafs in the field.

I have a soft spot for Turner but dear lord that man is gonna return to the dugout from 3rd base crying real tears.

You don't yell when you go to games?

    I get my monies worth.

I've actually been escorted by police out of PNC before for jumping on the dugout after Bonds blasted one. This is the yr he broke the single season record for most HRs

My old baseball coach worked for the Pirates and was laughing when he saw security bring me up. The Pittsburgh Police were not as nice. Cop said I don't blame you for jumping on the dugout everyone is here to see him hit a HR but if you come back in here your ass will be in jail.

My friends all stayed in this place for like 2 more innings I literally had to pay a security guard $5 to give me 4 quarters to use a pay phone to call one of there cell phones, mine fell out of my pocket when security grabbed my legs and swooped me off the dugout. I was leaning over to try to get a high five from Bonds.

The parents were all yelling at security as they took me out. Reason I had the Giants Michael Tucker and Pedro Feliz rolling the whole time . They were giving me balls to give to the kids between innings.

If you have dugout seats dont jump on the dugout and flick the whole crowd off its like running on the field. I didnt no that and really didnt care.

I told the cop I thought it was ok cuz i could place my Beer on the Dugout LOL. Nope!!

I do yell at the games but I'll have to not do that tonight or I'll be sorry later.

Only time I ever got in trouble at a baseball game was when I was seat jumping (I was early 20s at the time). Basically I would wait a few innings and then jump to unoccupied good seats.

Someone reported me, and then security came. Usually they just tell you to go back to your regular seats. Well, I had lost my regular ticket, so they started insisting I had snuck into the ballpark, and were really assholish about the whole thing. I kept offering to let them look up my credit card receipt (I had bought the seats directly from the team), but they kept dismissing me and saying they didn't need to do that because they knew I had snuck in, and they'd be wasting their time. Finally after I missed like 1.5 innings, they agreed to check and sheepishly admitted that I really did have seats there. I meant to report them the subsequent day, but forgot about it.

Anyway, it's always a challenge getting people to go with me during the week because all my friends in the area work day jobs.

Can't even take Ben because he has school tomorrow and will be too tired by the time we get back.

One of my old friends, big Dodgers fan, is in town today from Nevada, so we are going provided I can score decent seats on Stubhub for reasonable money, which it looks like I can.

So I'm probably going tonight. Will see Ryu pitch instead of Kershaw, but maybe that's a good thing.

Turner is good defensively, but in the past week or so, he's been making errors. Not sure why.

I don't think defense is as important in the postseason. Postseason is most about pitching, and secondarily about clutch hitting. Sure, defense is nice to have, and can change game outcomes in critical spots, but I find it to be a distant third as far as qualities I'd want my postseason team to have.

Honestly, the Dodgers' success or failure will hinge primarily upon whether they can keep consistently hitting HR.

    I'm going.

Look for me 2nd row between 3B and OF, field level.

As well documented here, Dodgers haven't lost in several years when I've attended a playoff game.

    Pitching is defense, no?

Duff, you that sure about the Rockies v Dodgers? Remember, Kenley Jansen may not make the trip to Denver if the Dodgers face the Rockies in the league championship...
