How do you order deli items?

Now I know I am old, but you always learn something new. At the deli counter waiting for my number. Chick in front of me was ordering meat by the dollar. She ordered 3 dollars of turkey and 2 dollars of cheese. God forbid I be called racist but is this a poor thing or a black thing?

It is a black thing. They also like to order cheese by the slice instead of by weight.

A couple years ago a Indian fellow was in a long line at a convenience store, I was right behind him. He got to the cashier and said "I 'vish' to order 3 gallons of gas". After much of haggling the cashier just got out a calculator and did the math.

As far as Deli meat, always and always and always order the premium brand on site. Never get the Supermarket specials, they are awful and been sitting there for a while. An extra $2 a pound is better for the quality premium brands.

I always get the $10.99 Turkey per pound versus the ghetto $5.99 special.

    Ok, all I got.

Old people and people who live on fixed incomes do this.

I used to work at a kosher store where you would get yelled at by the customer if you sliced or cut something that wasn't on the dot correct.

I think the slices part is just an idiot thing.

I will call a new pizza place, and ask, "Can you tell me how big your large is?", and the answer is frequently something like "8 slices".

When I clarify and say that I would like to know inches, about half the time they have no clue, and when I ask them to find out, they often say something like, "I just told you... it's 8 slices, I'm not sure we know the inches here."

I found the "slices" answer comes from uneducated people of all races.

Math is hard for some races.

Prices are plainly marked in delis.

The Black Forest Ham costs $5.99 a lb with $3 to spend & they don't know how much to get? Somebody get a gun .

The deli is a beautiful place. Now if you want the best of the best you're gonna want to get the real good Italian meats.

Copa - make sure you get a medium thin slice on this one
Prosciutto - now you're gonna want to ask for real thin slices here
Salami - the cut of the salami can go either way. Maybe you're like me and would like to eat the thing whole... thin slices are alright too
Mortadella - My personal favorite. Mortadella is to first class as bologne is to coach... and after all who doesn't like a good baloney sandwhich... amirite? Slice this one medium

I always go for a dutch crunch for the roll/bread

Now don't forget your pepperoncinis and pickles!

All good advice. Reminds me of another time I was at deli and guy ordered 6 slices of inch thick baloney. Yech.

I used to spend my summers with my very very Jewish grandparents. They owned a pawn shop about 100 yards from the main gate of Fort Lewis in Tacoma, WA

My granfather would tell me that I had go get groceries with him because he needed me to carry the bags (this started at about the age of 5, and lasted until I was done with grad school). My grandmother would always yell as we were walking out the door "make sure he doesn't spend all our money"

Going to get groceries mean't going to the Jewish Deli. The old guy behind the counter was a good friend of Grandparents.

It always went the same way every time, and would take at least an hour.

Grandpa: how is that (while pointing into the case)

    Old guy: Oh it's wonderful

    Grandpa: But is it fresh?

    Old guy: very fresh

    Grandpa: Give me a taste

Old guy : slices a piece and hands to my grandpa

Grandpa: Oh that's good, but can I afford it?

Old guy: tells him the price

    Grandpa: Oh that's steep...Give me a pound.

This would go on for at least 10 items, and for more than a half hour.
Plus at least a half hour of talking about family.

I would carry the bags into the house, and my grandmother would always say "I told you to not let him spend all our money" and give me a kiss on the cheek.

He probably fried it real good. It’s like a hamburger made of hotdog contents.
