"Uber is temporarily halting self-driving car tests"....

    understatement of the year

they're going to have to stick to literal commands for these bots

    "pick-up"

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

This has nothing to do with self driving vehicles.

People that can't dodge cars while they are j walking is just natural selection at work.

Woah yeah. I didn't even think of it that way. I was picturing the car blasting through a red light. If the walk sign wasn't flashing and illuminated I don't see why this is even a story. It would be like blaming AmTrak if someone got hit while stopping on the tracks to take pictures.

I've read about this before where the vehicle operator is in the back seat monitoring everything on a lap top and not even looking out the windows for the most part. You'd think Uber would spring for a second person to sit in the front seat with a chicken break.

I'm reading now this woman that got hit was riding a bicycle but stopped at the intersection to walk her bike across the street. I'm sorry but people that get off their bicycle to safely walk it across the street are not the kinds of people that suddenly become adrenaline junkies that try to frogger traffic before the light changes.

I was minding my own business masturbating reading about these amazing things my kaffirs are doing to white idiots in south africa when it hit me that the uber bot aimed for this lady. Think about it. Uber gets a taste for blood in it's bit role in Parkland and needs more and more. Plus who uses a German word that most everyone associates with Nazi propaganda as the name of their comapny? That's just asking for trouble. I really doubt the car could instantly pick up on if the woman was Jewish or not but I could totally see it mistaking her for being handicapped. Some censor probably went off that a person was getting pushed in a wheelchair across the street and the car just gunned it.

Seen several reports on the local news here in Phoenix.. At no time was there a mention she was walking her bike on the local news. It did however say she was in the middle of the block j walking away from the crosswalk.. She was literally standing in the middle of the fucking road and then got smashed as she tried to cross the northbound lanes.. My honest guess was she was either drunk or on drugs.. (she was tagged for drug possession in 2017). Also while the vehicle was operating in autonomous mode the Uber employee was not in the back as somebody speculated he was indeed riding in the drivers seat and its appearing she either didn't look at all before she stepped off the double yellow line (literally in the middle of the road she was lucky she wasn't hit sooner) and got smashed by the Uber going 40 (speed limit is 45 in the area).

In 2017 there was an accident involving a self driving Uber but the other car operated by a regular driver was deemed to be at fault not the Uber or its monitor/operator.. My guess is this is going to end up the same way.. Hard to dodge somebody when they step out right in front of you and not enough time to react..

Was a homeless person. I actually initially figured it was a homeless person when I heard about a self driving car hitting a pedestrian. But then when they announced it was a middle aged women it threw me off the scent a little, as that isn't a big homeless demographic.

Pretty obviously it was 100% the homeless persons fault. Homeless people here just walk in front of moving cars in the middle of traffic all the time and assume you will swerve to miss them or stop for them, and sometimes you can't react in time and you hit them, and it just is what it is.

My guess is that at this point driverless car technology is actually safer than humans (or very close). But the occasional accident is still going to happen.

And I also think a lot of the bad press is being supported by lobbies who has the most $$ to lose if this technology keeps moving forward, so they are going to sensationalize these kind of stories as long as they can to block progress. I am not even sure driverless car technology moving forward is a good thing for our societal fabric, because so many millions of Americans rely on being drivers as their jobs. And like most of our progress in the last 20 years or so, all the gains from this technology are going to be funneled to the top 1%, and the rest of us are going to be left in the lurch.

God this sounds horrible but yeah I'm legit hoping this was some moded homeless drug addict fucking up, and not some citizen who got glitched off this mortal coil.

because I fucking need my car to drive me to Borgata and back every other weekend and thats just how it is.

There has to be an acceptable amount of manslaughter to allow us to get to casinos conveniently.

If one small death on the roads then it's going to be a tough road for implementation.

Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day.

I understand all of the arguments about why this isn't as big of a deal as it seems on the surface, and I can't argue with any of them.

I'm sure we will be seeing worse in the coming years -- cars just outright making deadly mistakes, and killing innocent people.

The problem is that it's human nature to fear death at the hands of a cold machine, rather than at the hands of a human being who is consciously trying to keep us alive.

There are three degrees of control when it comes to our lives:

#1 - We trust ourselves the most.

#2 - We trust other human beings the second most

#3- We trust machines the least.

It doesn't help that we constantly see electronics and computers around us malfunction every day. When our cable box freezes up and we need to reset it, it's annoying, but not life-threatening. However, when we picture that same cable box driving our car, it's very scary.

Personally, I would never want a car to drive me, other than in situations where I'm clearly unable to drive. So if I'm driving to Vegas at 3am, 90 miles away, and feeling exhausted, yeah I'd be happy to let the car take over. Otherwise, I want to be the one driving. Same reason I don't put mods on this forum. If there's a failure, I want it to be my failure.

The self-driving cars will put a huge dent in the drunk driving problem. Imagine how much safer the roads will become at 2am when the drunk can just stumble to his car and ask it to drive him home.

When the media started hitting us with the concept of self driving cars, I will admit that I was rolling my eyes at how ridiculous the concept was. Then my best friend purchased a Tesla S with auto pilot, and took me for a test drive. I got in the passenger side firmly believing it was a total joke, ten minutes later I was firmly convinced that Tesla auto pilot was at least 10x safer than the average driver.

And honestly, trusting Tesla to do a sound implementation is approximately infinitely easier than trusting Uber who is losing like hundreds of millions of dollars a year to their own incompetence and hubris.
