What do you call a $5b Facebook fine?

    A good start

The fuck - the breakup value of FB will be greater than current price.

People really don’t give a shit. This revelation has astounded me. I still don’t understand why this is so but I accept it now.

This NY Times article looks great. Facebook cofounder Hughes writes.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/09/o...uckerberg.html

Mark is still the same person I watched hug his parents as they left our dorm’s common room at the beginning of our sophomore year. He is the same person who procrastinated studying for tests, fell in love with his future wife while in line for the bathroom at a party and slept on a mattress on the floor in a small apartment years after he could have afforded much more. In other words, he’s human. But it’s his very humanity that makes his unchecked power so problematic.

is his power really unchecked tho?

there are tons of federal data privacy guidelines. those check his power.

5b is laughable but the right wing hysteria about how these technocrats are allowed to mold society in their image is basically just them projecting their failed christian coalition agendas on people who at least have the common sense to profit from their fascism.

There are tons of federal data privacy guidelines? C’mon. You’re messing with me.

Zuck has the power conferred unto him by millions if not billions of simple common folk. Folks generally even dumber than federal enforcement.

Zuck is a monopoly with all the privileges that confers. He is a monopoly b/c the world decided he would be. Being a monopoly is not intrinsically evil. It was bestowed on him.

Privacy for clicks and you have decided that’s ok.

Zuck decides your news feed unilaterally, should he feel inclined that morning. Just an example.

    That’s power.

He is operating at a level of size, complexity, sophistication and lack of competition that he effectively can do what he wishes.

This is neither here nor there but.... I will forever have the vision of Facebook employees camped out in Trump’s campaign office seared in my brain.

    That’s power.

if youre going to go after people for being generally terrible at figuring out whats true and whats false, you should probably turn up the heat under the elected officials who are slashing funding for education, science, and arts.

fun fact; they all belong to the same party beholden to the christian coalition.

im sure its a big misunderstanding tho.

why is that seared in your brain. they were just doing the same things the other 95% of employees that were trying to help the left were doing. when I was trying to spam facebook before the 2018 election being a loudmouth, my comments would go invisible in like 10 minutes to random ppl cuz I wasn't saying "GO DEMOCRATS, BLUE WAVE!!!"

also for like the millionth time, the reason why facebook is power is because a bunch of cool kid progressive lefties started hanging out there and suddenly middle america wanted its seat at the table.

we keep waiting for the new william buckley to start a hot new spot to post ben garrison cartoons and it seems to be no closer to stealing stormfront's crown than it was pre-trump.

    why?

because the new conservatives are conspiracy spouting theocrats who believe the CIA is the deep state and that our secretary of state ran a pedo ring out of a pizza parlor. and its embarrassing beyond anything thats ever come out of AOC's mouth, by a huge margin.

so instead of calling out zuck for 'having control of your news feed', consider what sort of intellectual stagnation brought us to this point (see previous post).

Facebook rose to power because they were a better version of Myspace which also appealed to middle aged people a lot more than Myspace did.

Also, it wasn't run by idiots who had no idea what the fuck they were doing.

Facebook was a way to connect with and keep in touch with the whole collection of family members, friends, acquaintances, and old friends/acquaintances, and that understandably appealed to a large segment of the world's population.

Myspace could have done this originally, but they let the place get overrun by bots and spammers, and they allowed user-customized pages, which turned a large portion into an unusable mess.

A Facebook exec even admitted at one point that they only succeeded because Myspace fucked up, and not because of anything smart they did to overtake Myspace.

The poker equiavalent is seeing a fish shooting off at the table, and just playing ABC poker and waiting for him to basically give his chips to you.

Anyway, Facebook got the power, they were too big for anyone to rise up and challenge them, and they decided to abuse that power rather than be good corporate citizens.

    And here we are.
