It has little to do with the guns and more to do with the people. For example, the AR is perfectly legal in the country to our North which has a super low gun violence rate. Yes, if you have a license you can have an AR in Canada along will all the other semi autos we have here.
What we need is mental health resources that were taken away during the Reagan years. Not more gun laws.

It isn't a sensible law if your society isn't going to buy into it, even if it seems sensible in a vacuum. What happened with prohibition is an example of this. In a vacuum getting rid of alcohol seems reasonable enough. There is probably a lot of sensible laws we can all think of that aren't going to be passed, cause there would be too much resistance.
In your fantasy land where such a law was passed, I doubt police would even comply with forcibly trying to take peoples guns. Would be a nightmare with tons of cops and civilians getting shot/killed in standoffs.

Excellent point and that is certainly a contributing factor that must be addressed.
