Robert Long and Ginny Long told their 12-year-old son he was dying of cancer, just so they could run a GoFundMe page asking for donations.
They also set up a T-shirt fundraiser at his school, only selling 9 shirts, The GoFundMe page raised $1,000.
The boy was told he had multiple inoperable brain tumors, and would likely die soon.
The entire scam collapsed when school resource officers noticed that the boy seemed far too healthy for someone with cancer, and reported the situation to police.
After an investigation, while the boy fully believed he was going to die from cancer, the parents could not produce any medical records indicating he ever had that diagnosis, including ones they claimed existed on their GoFundMe page.
