so this whole VR thing seems to be going nowhere

has anyone else noticed that VR/AR has utterly failed to capture the hearts and wallets of the consumer?

honestly what really drove it home for me is the new xbox choosing to focus on 4k on rollout, and basically pretending they never mentioned it was going to support multiple VR headsets.

its a pity more people couldnt give VR porn a go because i think it would have been a game changer if they did, but its hard to really saddle up and ride the VR hype train considering:

    - its still absolutely terrible quality. everyone seemed to be just ever so sure that 800p and 1020p were right around the corner but its been 2 years since the peak marketing hit and exactly no one has put together a viable headset upgrade for a single platform.

    - the headsets are fucking ridiculous. they are heavy, sweaty, uncomfortable, require constant recalibration to go from D- to C+ performance, and having a monitor cable hanging off the back of your head reaaaaally doesnt lend itself to an immersive experience.

    - the games are straight garbage. this btw is the most surprising revelation to me, that a full 2 years later, the focus remains on somehow cutting into the teenage cell phone game market instead of developing thoughtful experiences that embrace the fucking platform. there are virtually no AAA games except doom and Fallout 4, and i never got doom to run right and Fallout 4 wanted me to pay $60 plus fucking tax for a game I already bought on ps4. oh and fun fact, i like to relax and play games. you know, sitting down. thats another weird trend thats somehow become the new standard; games you essentially need to stand / bob / weave / duck to play.

anyway im mad as hell and im not going to take this anymore.

All of this is true, and I've also thought about how VR has been a complete fail.

I remember back in the 1990s when everyone was first excited about it, and then the VR experience was this awful, pixelated nonsense, and everyone was like, "Yeah, no thanks."

It is pretty surprising that they've been unable to get it right, 25 years later.

I still think the tech isn't quite there yet. You're also correct that, for whatever reason, they haven't focused properly on the strongest aspects from a software standpoint. The best VR experience -- at least with current technology -- would involve exploring and flying over landscapes, but they don't seem to be going in that direction.

I do remember, though, how I derided HDTV as a fail in the early 2000s. They had talked about it throughout the 90s. Finally, around 2000-2002, people ran out and bought these expensive HD sets, only to have 1 or 2 HD channels showing programs they didn't really want to see. It took a little more time until HD became the standard, but there was a lag in between when it seemed to be going nowhere. Finally it caught on, and now you feel like a rube if you're watching anything new in SD.

Of course, with VR we're talking a lag of 25+ years, not 3-4 years, but I think it's kind of the same thing.

I once described what I believe will be the future of watching sports on TV, once technology, camera, and bandwidth needs catch up. The viewer will be able to place himself on the field/court virtually anywhere, and watch the action as if he's standing right there. Want to stand on the mound with the pitcher, and watch the ball whiz over your head when it's hit? You can do that. Want to stand behind the plate and call balls and strikes with the umpire, or perhaps stand with the hitter and try to swing at the pitch? You can do that. This is probably 50 years away, but I bet it will become reality one day, even if I never live to see it.

Coming much sooner will be the ability to visit landmarks and natural sights, and explore them without ever leaving home, or to simply fly around New York City like Superman. As the years go by, the experience will become more and more real, and people in the future will laugh at the idiots who are buying current VR machines, just like we laugh at people in 1974 who paid the equivalent of $2000 today for a machine which only played Pong.

Sorry but I’m not strapping vr blinders and a headset on while I rub one out solely based on the fact that it’s very difficult to explain away when the wife comes home from work early and taps you on the shoulder right before the climax. That’s a gut wrenching heart in the throat moment that I would rather not have to deal with ever again. I don’t recommend it for anyone.

I'm actually happy with my Rift but still agree with pretty much all your points.

Outside of the terrible cell phone VR stuff...

-Price point too expensive entry for most you need a 1500$ computer plus another 500-1000$ for VR software
    -Games are limited selection
-Gaming is exhuasting and hard to do for long periods.
-Gaming is hard socially since everyone else in the room is not experiencing what you are.
-Amount of space required can be a big issue. Ideally you want a largely empty room.
-Most games are typical PC games with VR elements.
-Motion sickness is huge issue so they have to dial down immersion.
-Headsets are wired which is annoying

Still I'm looking forward to playing Lone Echo in the coming weeks (been playing robo recall instead) and Oculus continues to be great hosting piece.

How has the personal robot changed your life since that time?

It will be as much as VR does for you.
