For VR to catch on with the masses they need it to work well on a console and make the headset wireless and comfortable.

Right now it's a joke using the PS4 VR with a super uncomfortable headset and a shit load of wires.

just your regular reminder that vr is cratering and instead of scaling back and waiting for the hardware to create a palatable consumer entry point, its continuing to salt the earth under its feet by burning through VC and destroying careers and reputations.

    BUMP

Benjamin has been asking for a VR headset, so I finally broke down, whipped out the Jew wallet, and bought him an Oculus Quest 2.

I've seen the ominous warnings about letting kids under 13 use VR headsets, but upon reading more about it, the science isn't really in on that, and some of the studies in fact say it's healthier for kids to play on it than adults.

I got it going tonight, and the setup process is kinda cumbersome. Benjamin really enjoyed his limited time on it. To be safe, we are only going to let him do it 30 minutes per day.

I attempted to ride a VR rollercoaster, and I got through the first one okay. The second VR rollercoaster got me sick, and I had to rip the thing off my head. I have heard that motion sickness is a big problem for VR, especially for older adults, so I'm guessing my usage of it will be limited. Ben didn't report any motion sickness at all, which would be consistent with the fact that kids can handle spinning rides at amusement parks for better than adults can (even compared to young adults).

Does anyone else have an Oculus Quest 2? Any tips? Any recommended games for a 10-year-old?

Unfortunately I have same issue. Some adults can be trained others can’t. The key issue is whether you are moving in game while staying in place in real life. But there are plenty of games with limited motion sickness as you teleport or barely move.

Also would suggest checking out pokerstars vr. Kinda cool feeling although all the games are horrible from poker perspective. Like play money games from 2000s. Tons of little kids playing.... Unfortunately no real money in vr poker yet.

I will say smoking a vr cigar while playing poker actually feels surprisingly good.

Also rollercoaster like one of the worst vr things you can do.

Biggest issue with ten year old is stay away from multiplayer games or heavily supervise. This is because nearly all multiplayer games have built in mic where people can talk to your child.

    I just have reGular oculus

Also I would suggest creed and beat saber. Both are great games both you and Ben would like. Creed mostly single player. You can even fight Ivan drago.

Both games have like no motion sickness, really fun, and great exercise.

If you want to add me to play shoot me a pm. I’m loving phasmophobia which is multiplayer ghost hunting. Not sure if works on quest though

Druff, you may want to check into this a little more depending on your plans using an Oculus headset.

Now, I dont own one nor know very much about them at this point, so im just passing this along. After browsing around on some different sites lately, ive seen some posts where people are pretty pissed off; From what ive seen, it apparently involves Facebook and their connection with Oculus.

Apparently (if FB hasn't yet already) they will REQUIRE you to have a Facebook account in order to use an Oculus device. This obv opens up a big can of worms in several areas. (e.g. if your FB happens to be banned, it fucks your Oculus device)

Also, according to a couple of articles i glanced, if you delete the FB account, it will delete any Oculus purchases you made:

Personally, all of this makes me think twice about ever owning an Oculus, because I've distanced myself from Facebook as it is the past couple of years and so far don't plan on returning.

The idea of having to own a shitty social media account in order to use a piece of equipment that I paid several hundred dollars for seems absolutely ludicrous to me.

Looks like they are already starting to jailbreak them from that.

Yeah, I read that too. What kind of bullshit headaches is this going to cause though? FB is already notorious for banning accounts for stupid reasons...what will they do to users that they sooner or later find out jailbroke the devices? And they WILL find out - i beg someone to convince me otherwise. Facebook knows A LOT more than what typical users think. For example, from what ive learned the past few years, I would have to jump through some serious hoops for facebook to not figure out that I made a second account...even without the same device, email etc.

Call me a huge skeptic, but so far I see no evidence to shift my opinion.

You guys should know me better than that.

I was (rightfully) paranoid about personal info dating back to the 1980s.

Zero point zero chance I'm giving them any access to my Facebook. I was in the process of creating a fake account just for use with Oculus, when Ben said that he already made a burner Facebook awhile back. So we used that one.

I agree that the requirement for a Facebook account is obnoxious.

I absolutely can't get the Windows Oculus software to download the Beta version.

Stuck in "queue" for 3 days.

I'm doing this because the beta version allows you to use the USB-C cable to play PC games on your headset, whereas otherwise you need their stupid $80 cable.

So humble bundle has a great deal right now. 23 bucks for handful of vr games. I will probably vomit all over playing them but it’s an amazing deal I have to get.

yes, they make vr porn that's POV and you can look around and I've heard good things from other jacker offers about it. I mainly justified buying it for my sim racing (mainly project cars 2) setup, right now i have a decent wheel and pedals, it's just cumbersome putting all the shit at my desk when i want to play. the headset will allow me to move that shit away from my monitor and have it ready to go, allowing me to waste time more efficiently

Wiz, you tried VR mode of Flight Simulator yet?

I see they recently released an update giving support to that. Part of me thinks this will be really cool, and part of me this will be lame or in need of a lot of work.

100% we're not that far off from VR professional sporting event experiences. Pretty sure I'll be able to stand with Mookie Betts in the Dodgers outfield during a game before his contract expires in 2031.

Honestly that’s the way to go. Systems for 400-500 bucks kinda overpriced.

Even if you are prone to getting sick lots of games you can still play. The key is if you are prone to getting sick you won’t be able to play games with smooth movement that you use a controller for. Lots of games have teleport option because of this.

It’s pretty cool but still kinda a novelty. Also think about getting some modifications for headset as sweat is serious issue.

oh sick i didn't know fs2020 had it, i thought i was going to have to dust off Flight Simulator X for it. I will give it a shot when the headset arrives, but i'm still running the old 1070ti so i imagine the experience in fs2020 is gonna be kinda shitty
