Tickle i think your read on Republicans is wayyyy off. You think they're pondering UBI, no way. I think it's much more likely they're pondering how to sell their useful idiot base on eliminating the minimum wage laws. Maybe insert it in a draconian Trump free trade bill or maybe impeach Trump and roll out an even worse version of the TPP. Under no circumstances will the GOP do something that may cost their donors money.

Trust me, they would love to get some really nice sweatshops going here in the USA or have automation take over. Trump's tax plan actually rewards businesses who switch from human workers to automation.

Oh and YT has just released new rules for monetization and i'm not sure but maybe censoring content. We're surrounded by dead frogs and people still think this warm water is to keep us comfy, haha.

Not talking about Republicans, talking about right-wing in general (not necessarily in the USA). Just cos generally UBI is seen as a socialist thing.

This either or argument just doesn’t hold water with me. In Massachusetts the minimum wage is $11. I can still go to McDonalds and buy a triple cheeseburger for $3. They still have almost free food.

I was shocked recently to see California’s minimum wage was only $7.50. They must clear $5 after taxes and shit. That’s ridiculous. Im going to work an hour for a gallon of milk? Druff references social programs to supplement the shortfall. Just pay a living wage and fuck government.

People don't want to acknowledge the role played by accident in their lives. Luck. What family you were born to. How well you were raised. What luck genetics had with your intelligence and health - especially mental health.

Don't be deceived by life's outcomes. Life's outcomes, while not entirely random, have a huge amount of luck baked into them. Above all, recognize that you have had success, you have also had luck. And with luck comes obligation. You owe a debt, and not just to your gods.

You owe a debt to the unlucky.

There used to be a thing in the US called Nobless Oblige. The inferred responsibility of privileged people to act with generosity and nobility toward those less privileged. The nobility in England often recognized they just luckboxed by birth enormous privilege and wealth. They would be inclined to act charitably.

There is this idea now that because I make millions of dollars doing something that didn’t used to pay nearly as much, like investment banking, I somehow “earned it” and others have the same opportunity so fuck em.

Years ago kids went to a Harvard because their parents went to Harvard. Not because they got an 800 on their SAT. Back then I think people were more inclined to nobless oblige.

Druff’s original reply to limitles’s first post pissed me off. However, later posts remind me he does give back. The best example is Scalir. I am sure he does more.

My message is that luck plays an enormous role in life. Luck and randomness play a huge role in everyday and world events. Sorry to dispel those conspiracy theories. There is bad luck too. People with less good fortune who labor with handicaps - emotional, intelligence and physicical. Guys who had less opportunity.

Pay them a living wage. Help them find some kind of work. Be generous personally and distrust government’s ability to succeed with assistance.

Finally, California is a shithole and fail. Of course there are tent cities in Cali and not Mass. Is Cali just too large to be run effectively? Are people there just assholes? Incredible the minimum wage is so low in an otherwise socialist state. Truly a fail.

Read the book "Outliers: The Story of Success" by Malcom Gladwell.

Incorrect....California has one of the highest minimum wages in the nation.. For 2018 it is $11/hour and goes up $1 / year until it reaches $15/hour. Only Washington State and DC have higher wages. Most of the country maintains the federal minimum wage which is $7.25/hr.

I haven't read the book, but I subscribe to Gladwell's podcast, and he talks a lot about how "success" is so much luck, and how much being born with resources gives you advantages in non obvious ways.

For example, he talks about how one of the advantages of being born middle class or upper class that people don't appreciate is you can survive something traumatic happening in your childhood, like a divorce or a parent dying, or whatever, that will most likely derail you if you are poor even if you are initially on a path to success.

E.G. he interviewed a poor smart, kid from the ghetto that had been "discovered" and been given a prestigious scholarship to a private school when he was in middle school, and things were going good until one day he just disappeared. He said he interviewed the kid and found out his mother had gotten into drugs and couldn't function anymore and he had to drop out of the private school and stay home and take care of his mother and little sister.

Actually it does fit with your beliefs. I think he must be thinking of another book or took something else from it.

However, I think the book goes too far in attributing luck to success.

Now you have to read it and tell us your take.

Gladwell is definitely a social justice warrior. Especially when it comes to race, he would never admit or acknowledge that any differences between the races is due to anything but luck and one side victimizing the other. No personally responsibility at all. You just have to know that going in, and weigh what he says accordingly. He still makes a fairly persuasive argument and is a good storyteller. Just understand you are only getting told the side of the story he wants to tell.

100% this. I knew nothing of the author and didn't look him up until I finished. I wasn't surprised, but still very interesting.

The things he leaves out for example in the Bill Gates story is all the ways he took it upon himself to seek out the opportunity and to make something of it.

There were how many other people in that area with the same opportunity who did not take the initiative and go to the same lengths that Gates did to capitalize on that opportunity?

Know nothing about book or author but the highlighted sentence is an uneducated one. And that's as nice as I can put it. Apologies if I'm misreading your sentence.

Jews were disbarred from practising law, being editors or proprietors of newspapers, or joining the Journalists' Association. Jewish lawyers and judges were dragged out of courtrooms during trials.[87] Jewish students were restricted by quotas from attending schools and universities.[85] Jewish businesses were targeted for closure or "Aryanization", the forcible sale to Germans; of the approximately 50,000 Jewish-owned businesses in Germany in 1933, about 7,000 were still Jewish-owned in April 1939

You sound like a super intelligent, successful, hardworking fellow

What do you do for a living?

*edit* no need to answer me, I figured it out all by myself while bored this evening.

You're a low limit professional poker player, or as you say... spend all day flippin coins in online donkaments on brovada
You've got it made, smoking pot all day and playing video games between those low limit donkaments.

Do you really live in Laclede? (surely this is a troll?)
Seems to be a nice town if you're piss poor and white. A quintessential redneck community.
Must be a genuine concern to the community that in the last 10 years the black community has trebled. I believe you now have three African Americans in town.

You must be trolling us, surely such an intelligent young man wouldn't live in such a shit-hole.

Don't think you need to worry about anyone redistributing your wealth.
I love laclede thanks tho, and yeah you got most of it right. Except the part where you magically think all white people are racists (oh the irony) ... #libtards are actually this stupid <3
