Poor track maintenance is the most likely, followed by human error (e.g. driver runs a red signal, unclear instructions from signaller), then mechanical failure.

Literally LOL at all the comments in tis thread about the crash being due to poor maintenance of outdated tracks. Today was literally the first day of this new route where the crash occurred, on the Cascade route, which was designed for the train to be able to go quicker. It's not exactly some great mystery.

Humorously, our president gut-reacted by blaming old infrastructure when he actually could've just credibly blamed Obama. The crash occurred because of infrastructure improvements funded by the Obama stimulus.
