Someone explain the 'radioactive playing card cheat' to me please

tl;dr someone discovered that 13 cards in a deck had been treated with medicinal iodine-25, which is radioactive, allowing someone to detect marked cards using a worn piece of hardware.

the only conceivable way this works is if somehow, they have some sort of directional detection embedded in eyeglasses i guess? so they look at the opponents hands and it alerts if they have marked cards maybe? is that even possible?

otherwise what, it silently tells you if your cards are marked, which doesnt strike me as a huge advantage play...

The article says 13 cards, which would indicate a suit, but they could have come from multiple decks. The problem is that we have no idea what game they were playing. It wasn't even a real casino, so who knows what kinds of weird German shit they were playing. Maybe you win by drawing a spade.

From time to time they xray us too, but that doesn't mean I want that shit constantly shooting through me, neutrinos excluded

My guess - self dealt game, something we are not familiar with. Put a little detector in a ring. It probably isn't even that hard these days. Find some IOT censor and put it in a big clunky ring. Bluetooth to an earpiece or whatever. I haven't investigated but I could probably come up with a prototype pretty quickly utilizing a bit of help, assuming the censors exist and I'd be surprised if they don't.

How the info was used etc, I have no clue. If it was a weird ass home game, there might not have been sufficient rules to keep out this cheating. (ie burning at the proper times)

Around here tere was a whole weird cheating ring around here with a guy who used earphones and a barcode reader. (barcodes on edges of cards) Bought in with tab for 10k+ so he had this pyramid, sat across from dealer and put his "cellphone" right on the center of the chips. LOL. One of the crooks actually called me to ask if a friend of mine (whom the crook hated) wanted to play in this 5/10 NL game ! After all this blows over people go back to playing with some of the people involved. I suspect the ringleader plays in the big mixed games around here.

It is annoying have to worry about this sort of shit all the time.

They play 50/100 PLO around here and it is run by some guy.. who the fuck knows, such a license to steal. I'd put odds of being cheated in such a game high enough to make it very much not worth playing. People in the games I play in watch burns and such. In casino poker people have the luxury of not really having to concern themselves with such things.
