Well, it is a bit more complicated than that. In the north, because of how the economy was set up slavery wasn't necessary for the wealthy white people to keep all their shit, so they took the "moral" ground of being anti-slavery. In the south, slavery was necessary for the wealthy white people to keep their shit, so they were pro continuation of slavery.

At the end of the day, most people just do what they perceive to be in their self interest, and then rationalize it and moralize afterwards.

It is true that most cultures historically had slaves, and the whole idea of being "moral" and saying slavery is even wrong started in the Western world very recently, and again this was a lot because of industrialization and our economies became so efficient slavery wasn't practical anymore.

Slavery/Indentured Servitude, especially sex slavery and forced prostitution, is still a big part of the Muslim world in the Middle East and Africa, although they frame it differently, and our media ignores it for PC reasons.

Actually, I would argue most involvement of the Western world in the developing world, has been negative overall. There is two reasons for this. 1) Most of the help is actually exploitative, and the real motive is normally to make rich Americans richer. 2). Even good intention aid is deleterious in the long run, because it facilitates a population increase that the native economy and land cannot sustain.

Most of the fastest growing populations in the world are in places that cannot sustain this population themselves, and are hugely dependent on foreign aid for people to meet their basic needs. There would have obviously been more infant/child death in the short term, but in places like the Palestinian Territories, Eastern Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa everyone would probably be much better off if they had been left alone the last 100 years or so and had no foreign aid.

I don't think the media ignore it. I read about it regularly. You don't see it much on TV, but TV news sucks. If you want to know what's going on you have to read. Old school actual newspapers and magazines, that's where the real info is. I can't remember the last time I voluntarily turned on TV news or read a TV news channel's web site.
