Here's the oddest part:

The school explains it by stating that the girls were recording themselves "speaking gibberish which, when edited and played backwards, apparently sounds like a racial slur."

This is because of an Instagram comment on their page saying, "serrgin cuff", and it is assumed that the girls recorded themselves saying that, and then played it backwards to change it to "fuck n-word".

I don't even think that's true, because simply pronouncing a backwards word won't make it necessarily sound like you'd expect when played backwards.

Even if it is true, why does it matter? It's clear what they were intending.

This was recorded over a year ago, and not on school property. It just came to social media's attention yesterday.

In their defense I doubt any 15 year old white girl from Utah knows shit about any US history that isn't related to the Mormon church. They have probably never even heard a white person say the N word derogatorily or know any of the history behind the word. All they hear is black people using it mainly as a form of endearment in rap songs. I am not saying they don't know white people aren't supposed to say that word, but because of the generation they live in, it just doesn't mean what it does even for those of us in our 30s-40s. As long as the media lets it go and doesn't start going after them 10 years down the line when they are applying for jobs I doubt it is going to impact their lives negatively very much going forward.
