    Annual Physical

    Physical this past Friday:

    Pulse rate: 71
    BP: 119 over 70
    Total Cholesterol: 132
    Blood Glucose: 99
    BMI: 26.5

    All of the above are really good numbers for someone now pushing 50.

    But here is the deal, the Doc said my liver enzymes are way too high. Basically said if I don't stop drinking, I won't make it to 60. That fucking sucks because I really like to drink. I am going on an Alaskan cruise with the family next month. I really can't fathom not walking down to the bar at 9am and getting a Bloody Mary. Always loved bullshitting with the Indonesian bartender when nobody else is there. I don't think I ever had a true breakfast on a cruise. Two Bloody Marys with celery and olives, name me a better breakfast. Now apparently I will be toasting an english muffin with jam and a coffee. That is just a beat. Bloody Mary at an empty bar with an Indonesian or waiting in line at a toaster with some farmer goober so excited they get unlimited bread products, do the math on that one.

    I am 48 and a half. I am an old guy. I was surprised at my BMI, basically I am officially overweight although I look normal. I feel like shit though. Doc says its all due to carbs, I bought literally $300 of pure protein (enough salmon and chicken to fee the Waltons for a month) and got rid of all alcohol products when I got the enzyme results yesterday. Doc was actually concerned enough he called me on a Saturday afternoon.

    You don't need a passport for Alaska, but I do have one for the British Columbia stopover. You are an annoying little twerp by the way, so glad you are parked in Portland which is the shithole of the country, best to keep guys like you segregated away from the masses.

    This thread makes me want to look at my last physical…hmm.

    I keep my drinking to the weekends though when not on vacation and max is 6 beers based on how much alcohol is in them. I try and keep the multiplayer under 30 so no hangover….6 beers x .05 abv = 30, an IPA at 7.5% = max 4.

    Used to drink much much more before kids, we’d play water volleyball all day Saturday with a keg…did that now I’d be dead in a year.

    Brother it is hereditary.

    Blood pressure issues and cholesterol issues are mostly hereditary, with only a small portion of it lifestyle-related. There is a small percentage of people who can control high BP or cholesterol with lifestyle changes, but most require meds.

    Brother, I present to you a good example of this, in Master Scalir. He and I have similar diets, are a similar height and weight, and are a similar age. He has very good blood pressure but moderately high cholesterol. I have very good cholesterol numbers but moderately high blood pressure. The difference is in genetics.

    Brother in the 1980s there was a big panic about cholesterol, and many people cut out fatty foods from their diet in fear of their cholesterol becoming elevated. Years later it was learned that diet only has a small impact on cholesterol levels for most people, but most still engage in this incorrect old school thinking.

    Brother there are good reasons to stay away from a high fat diet (such as weight concerns), but cholesterol isn't one of them. Same thing with blood pressure and salty foods. Even if I cut out all salt and stress from my life, I would still have high blood pressure.

    Brother, human beings are naturally wired to expect good results from good behavior, and bad results from bad behavior. It makes people feel uncomfortable to learn that certain things are completely out of their control. Brother, people who know of my high fat diet get very upset when they hear that my total cholesterol is 141, while theirs is over 200 and they watch everything they eat.

    T at 442 is lowish but acceptable for a 50 year old. I would want it at least 600 personally.
