Craig Carton (Half of Boomer/Carton) Arrested For Fraud

May or may not resonate with those of you who aren't from the northeast, but holy shit what a mor-an...nationally syndicated show on CBSSN and broadcast on WFAN, the biggest sports channel in the world...flushing it all for 2 fucking million dollars, which I'm sure he had to chop up 50:50...so a million fucking dollars...the ego and invincibility complex of some famous people is pretty unreal...

Radio personality Craig Carton, who co-hosts the Boomer & Carton show on WFAN and CBS Sports Network, has been arrested as part of an alleged fake ticket scam that netted $2 million, NBC 4 New York reports.

Per the station’s Jonathan Dienst, FBI agents picked up the 48-year-old Carton at his Manhattan home earlier this morning. Dienst reports that Carton and another man are accused of defrauding investors in a discount ticket broker business that did not, in reality, exist.

Carton has hosted the show with former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason since 2007; Boomer & Carton has been simulcast on television since 2010.

The show, which is airing right now, hasn’t addressed the arrest. It opened with Esiason saying Carton was “under the weather” and a guest host would be filling in.

WFAN morning show co-host Craig Carton was arrested early Wednesday for duping investors out of $5.6 million to cover his staggering gambling debts, authorities said.

The motor-mouthed Carton turned to crime after running up millions of dollars in losses with two casinos, plus a debt of $825,000 to an unidentified individual, court papers charged.

Carton and co-defendant Michael Wright were both charged with securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy. The two could face a maximum of 45 years in prison and fines running into millions of dollars.

“Behind all the talk, the Carton and Wright show was just a sham, designed to fleece investors out of millions ultimately to be spend on payments to casinos and ... other personal debt,” said U.S. Attorney Joon Kim.

A 26-page Securities and Exchange Commission filing accused Carton of lying to his investors, going as far as to send phony documents and e-mails to his unsuspecting business partners.

“Carton’s deceit did not stop with providing fake documents ... When (one investor) made its $2 million investment, Carton misappropriated the money by lying,” according to the court papers.

Carton, 48, was arrested by FBI agents at his Manhattan home — causing the highly-paid sports talk gabber to miss his morning show opposite former New York Jets star Boomer Esiason.

“I am aware now why Craig is not here this morning,” Esiason told listeners Wednesday. “Unfortunately, he was arrested this morning ... I’m taken aback and surprised by it, just like everybody else is.

“I thought he called in sick this morning, but unfortunately my partner was arrested.”

CBS Radio, the parent company of WFAN, released a statement saying they were aware of the arrest and cooperating with authorities.

Carton earns a reported $250,000 a year as the sports radio station’s morning drive-time co-host.

Carton allegedly lured investors into a fraudulent ticket resale business, promising to deliver face-value tickets to concerts by stars like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Metallica and Barbra Streisand.

“In reality, no such agreements with the concert promoter or venue existed, and the signatures for the concert promoter or venue,” the SEC charged.
At the time, Carton had “accrued millions of dollars worth of gambling-related debts to casinos and other third parties,” court papers indicated.

Some of the money scammed from investors was used to repay other investors in what prosecutors described as “a Ponzi-like scheme.”

Carton was a close friend of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, often inviting the politician to appear on his WFAN program.

He and Esiason also hosted an annual benefit softball game to benefit the Port Authority PBA Widows’ and Children’s Fund.

A second lawsuit filed against Carton this past May accused him of skipping out on $114,116.13 in rent on a Soho business office leases under the name Advance — one of his bogus ticket-selling companies.

The SEC filing also accused Joseph Meli, 43, of Manhattan, of conspiring with Carton in the scam. Meli was not mentioned in the criminal complaint.
A former Tribeca neighbor of Carton told the News there was no indications of any problems with the radio show host.

“He was a very nice guy around me,” said the neighbor. “He was very quiet.”

The acid-tongued Carton joined Esiason on WFAN on Sept. 4, 2007 — nearly 10 years to the day of his arrest.

Carton’s rise to New York radio included stops in Buffalo, Cleveland, Philadelphia and New Jersey. The New Rochelle native was nominated in 2006 as national talk show host of the year.

Carton is married and the father of four children.

I didn't think I knew who this guy was, but once I saw him I recognized him from the short-lived spiketv show MMA Uncensored, with Luke Thomas and some other guy.

Side note I'm pretty sure Cincy would lay significant claim to Boomer for his time in stripes and run to SB 16

good read...he was seemingly in deep with casinos...wouldn't be surprised if he was also in deep shit with the mob given they mentioned and "unidentified individual"...

wife and 4 kids and a $250K job down the shitter...man that's some huge shit to swallow right there...wife is beyond fucked I would guess...feds are gonna claw back everything they can get their hands on unless they somehow have all their shit in her name...

That 250k is WILDLY off LMAO. That was pulled from some random internet website that hasn't been updated in who knows how long. But I know if it was on the internet it must be true. It was speculated by some people in the industry who would know he made (past tense obv) between 1.5-2m a year. He lived in a very exclusive building in Manhattan(rent 25k a month), also has a nice house in the suburbs, and was a HUGE gambler (10k a blackjack hand) and was basically given the whale treatment at whatever casino he went to. You aint doing all that on 250k. He also has 4 children who are presumably in very expensive schools, and a wife that does not work. The tuition alone for those rugrats is probably a 100k. I mean this guy was the cohost of one of the biggest radio shows in NY, a massive gigantic market that makes serious money.

Anyway I read the entire indictment and this is what happened. He basically got one huge hedge fund on the hook for 10m initially (if it went well they were going to give him up to 40m) and once he had them on the line he just kept bilking them with fake contracts to "buy tickets". It seemed like toward the end the hedge fund might have been getting hip to it or at least "uncomfortable", because they started to request the money be wired directly to the place he was supposed to buy from, not to him directly. The last score he had was the biggest one for 2 million, that was wired direct to the company for the phony purchase. Afterwards he simply called the company, said it was wired by mistake, and they sent it back to his personal account per his request. (he was doing business with this company but it was minimal as far as ticket buying. But again he was doing a lot through his personal accounts so it didn't raise suspicion). Carton was continuing to owe casinos money, so basically every time he got a draw from the hedge fund company a portion went to pay previous investors whose loans were coming due, and then the casinos which he was into for hundreds of thousands at a time. There is your classic ponzi scheme.

Even his massive salary couldn't cover the losses and they just piled up to the point he was in so deep he had to just start taking in money to pay the debts off. One thing in the indictment that was fascinating is when he got the credit line from the hedge fund for 10m. They have a text message where he was like "I did it guys!!" and how that was going to pull him out of the hole. You can tell he was almost done and when that came through it was like new life. After that, literally a week before a debt/investment repayment was due, he would just make up a fake contract, take it to the hedge fund and get another draw. The draws started off at like 700k, then 300k, and he was getting them like that but that last one for 2m is where I think it went wrong.

He'll probably get 3-5 years if I had to guess. This is about as open and shut a case (as it usually is when the feds are involved) they have emails texts everything. The indictment is a fascinating read, they had someone who was cooperating and who tipped them off to this initially. I'm guessing they got in a jam for something else and handed them Carton to get out of whatever situation they were in.
