HOA fail of the century: Mega-mansion-lined San Fran private street sold at tax auction for a pittance

A couple bought one of the most exclusive streets in San Francisco for $90,000 — take a look inside
    http://www.businessinsider.com/photo...-street-2017-8

    Cliffs:

HOA for a mansion-filled San Francisco development didn't pay $14/year tax for a private street for 3 decades.

Wealthy homeowners were not aware that city put private street up for sale at a tax auction.

Young couple who don't live on the street and bought it at the auction plan to charge homeowners for use of the street, expecting to recover way more than what they paid for it.

Homeowners are suing the city and the couple, claiming the city was sending the tax bill to an old address.

P.S. Thread title should say only "mansion", not "mega-mansion".

What up Tom. Even if these "people" aren't who they say they easily could be if they wanted to. It's much better to just take everything at face value.

Why was SF selling a street, anyway?

    Doesn't even make sense.

If the tax was delinquent, why not simply charge penalties as all other cities do?

MumblesBadly: The bill wasn't paid for 3 decades. At some point, delinquency triggers a tax auction.

Since the city is being sued, I bet the city finds some way to jack the street back from the owner in some sort of appeal.

Possible, but some funny shit happens because bills get sent to old addresses that don't get paid. For example, my sister's boss once successfully renegotiated terms on a large commercial real estate loan with a bank that was threatening to foreclose because the bank didn't respond to a commercial lease payment request to my sister's bosses business that was sent to a valid address on the paperwork. The failure of the bank to respond within a specified time gave her boss the legal right to evict the bank from that branch location, which at that time had grown to be an important location for its business. I guess visions of all of their customers seeing an eviction notice on the door of the bank would have also been bad for the bank's image of financial solvency.
