I would like to move to this area in appx. a year's time. I've never been to SoCal, so I will most likely will be winging it. I'm looking to purchase a home there a la this property:

    https://www.redfin.com/CA/Topanga/35...0/home/6851616

Does anyone here live or know anything regarding this particular locale?

Topanga Canyon is a major street that runs across the San Fernando Valley from Chatsworth to Woodland Hills then it turns into a windy canyon road that will take you into Malibu. The area is famous for being where Charles Manson once lived and committed his first murder. It's known as sort of a hippie area...very artsy. The area is also prone to big fires. If you are looking to be in this general area of So Cal there are much better places to live. Assuming you can afford the house you linked...I would look at Calabassas or Sherman Oaks, Encino or Studio City . You will hear people say that they live "South of the boulevard" which refers to Ventura Boulevard. That is the premier area to live in the valley.

Why do you want to live in Topanga canyon specifically? Can you afford to spend over 1M+ on a house under 2000 sq ft?

Where are you planning on working if you move there? It takes awhile to get from Topanga Canyon to anywhere else in Los Angeles. And even Topanga Canyon Blvd gets slammed with traffic in morning and afternoon rush hours due to people going from Malibu to the valley.

Question: Are you looking to be close to LA? Isolated? Semi-isolated?

If you're going to leave the area with any frequency, you don't want to live in Topanga Canyon.

This is weird, but I think one of the biggest problem I would have living in Topanga Canyon or the Hollywood Hills or those type of places is having to drive 5 miles to get good cell phone service.

I get that when I am in my house I can use wifi to do my stuff, but I have gotten so used to having my phone with me, and instant access to reasonably fast LTE cell service when I am around town (going to the store, walking the dogs, sitting in my car, whatever), that always having bad/no reception would drive me crazy. I know it has driven me crazy whenever I drove through, or occasionally hiked in canyons/hills.

Cant speak to the reception in Topanga Canyon but a good friend of mine grew up in the Hollywood Hills. I spent alot of time at his place and never had an issue with cell reception. It was a pretty sick house. Not much to look at from the outside but the inside and the backyard were amazing. The property sits literally directly above the Hollywood Bowl and sitting in the back yard you could hear the concerts below. A really nice pool, tennis court, guest house...

He also once tried to welch on a $200 bet here via a PayPal chargeback, but quickly made it right when I raised the issue here.

But that was the old Krypt who was generally hated. The new Krypt, hookers and all, seems to be beloved here nowadays.

I do think it's fairly obvious his parents will be paying for this house he's talking about, unless he recently came into money via inheritance.
