It takes a special kind of stupid for an American to travel to North Korea. Why did he go there? Was he a liberal trying to change the world? Or trying to show people that North Korea isn't as bad as the evil US government claims it is? I'm interested in his reasoning to travel there. You travel to the most dangerous place in the world, and knowingly break the law, there can be consequences.
His father said he was in China on a college trip and went on a tour group with others to North Korea, it was apparently advertised with a professional company in China. Apparently these tour groups exist from China. This is the tour company he traveled with. I guess they specialize in going to exotic, or dangerous places normal people would rather stay away from. Maybe it is an adrenaline thing? Maybe for bragging rights, to say you went to North Korea and survived?

There was a movie way back when, I cant even remember it, but the premise was a couple young guys intentionally crossed into Soviet Russia from Finland in the snow. It was a mortally dumb movie, they get captured and imprisoned, naturally the hero escaped in the end.
I get the idea on why someone in their early 20s would take the chance to go to NK especially if alcohol is involved the night before. When I was 21, we jet skied at night. Crazy stupid. One night I nearly drown, thankfully I am a skilled swimmer and was able to survive (injured elbow and some mild internal trauma, but nothing too serious)

They claim they had footage of him stealing the sign on cctv, but I could see them making up a story like that just because they want to keep him. I read that often time when they detain foreigners like this, they know they are spies, but can't prove it, so they make up weird stories like this that make no sense. I'm not saying hes a spy, but I'm wondering if he really did steal a sign.
