2 Rio Las Vegas guests contract Legionnaires' disease

"Shortly after the guests confirmed their illnesses, the property tested its water system, and the results came back positive for Legionellabacteria, the heath district said."

Does the shit box Rio have building cooling towers for air conditioning in common areas?

Pitiful reporting. Quick google, cut and paste - submit article

I know poor folk use swamp coolers in the desert. It's Caesars and it's old and maintenance is a frill CZR can't indulge - so it feels like we're in the right range.

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported in guests who stayed separately at the Rio hotel-casino in March and April.

The hotel is assisting in the investigation and taking steps to provide information to past and current guests of the property.

The Rio released a statement Friday afternoon.

“Test results on the water at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino indicated the presence of the legionella bacteria. The company is working closely with the Southern Nevada Health District and taking aggressive remediation actions to ensure the safety of Rio's water. Out of an abundance of caution, we are relocating guests from rooms where remediation actions are being undertaken.”

In order to prepare and increase your good karma, do you have any tidbits of information you could share with those among us who are doing some soul searching in the sportsbook?

More interestingly, what is the over/under on how much the Rio will be sued for by people who come done with this disease while staying there this year?

As someone who is about to check in tomorrow, this disturbs me... but not for the reason you think.

It disturbs me because this occurred in the Ipanema Tower, where I'll be saying.

But not for the reasons you think.

It disturbs me because this might cause room closures and prevent me from staying in the area of the Ipanema which I strongly prefer.

I'm not afraid of catching Legionnaire's. Two people out of the many thousands there since March is not an outbreak. I still like those odds.

    Still, LOL @ the Rio.

The maintenance of this place is total shit.

Stayed in the Ipanema tower last Sunday and Monday night. They free "upgraded" me to one of those large suites at the very end of the hall. Room 1954 to be exact.

Been sick since Wednesday tho I think/hope it's just food poisoning. Truly hope that's not near your favorite area Druff!

    More like the Legionnaires' maker.

I like the stadium baccarat the Rio has. Me and the old lady had fun sitting among the gooks and trying to heeb up on a Banker run. Good times.

2 guests at Rio got Legionnaires’ disease, officials say
    https://lasvegassun.com/news/2017/ju...ase-officials/

“Legionnaires’ disease (a type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria) is contracted by inhaling aerosol droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria. Sources of the aerosol can include showers, hot tubs, faucets, cooling towers, misters and decorative fountains,” health officials said in the release.

The majority of people who come in contact with the bacteria aren’t sickened, health officials said. However, for those who are affected, it can cause serious complications that have resulted in death.

Three guests at the Luxor contracted the disease in spring and December of 2011, according to previous reports. The guest who became ill in December died the following month.

Also in 2011, six people contracted the disease at the Aria.

The symptoms of the disease, which are generally noticeable within two to 10 days after exposure to the bacteria, are similar to other types of pneumonia, which typically include: coughing, shortness of breath, a fever, muscle aches, and headaches, health officials said.

People should watch for the symptoms for two weeks after the time they think they may have been exposed, health officials said. Rio guests who stayed at the property more than that period should be OK, but those who spot the symptoms in under those 14 days should seek medical attention.

People most prone to contracting the disease:

    • Those age 50 and older

    • Current and former smokers

    • Have a chronic lung disease

    • Have a weakened immune system

    • Take medication

    • Have diseases, such as diabetes or organ failure

Congratulations, if you are staying at the Rio, you now have a greater chance of getting Legionnaires’ disease than cashing in any WSOP event.

For those infected the Rio will offer a one-time voucher for a free buffet.
Of course, that buffet may be contaminated and you may get food poisoning.

Thank you for visiting the Rio All Suites Hotel.

Mayo clinic info on Legionnaires' disease:

Very rare, Fewer than 20,000 US cases per year

    Treatable by a medical professional

    Requires a medical diagnosis

Lab tests or imaging always required

Short-term: resolves within days to weeks

Legionnaires' disease doesn't spread from person to person. Instead, the bacteria spreads through mist, such as from air-conditioning units for large buildings. Adults over the age of 50 and people with weak immune systems, chronic lung disease, or heavy tobacco use are most at risk.

Many people exposed to the bacteria don't develop symptoms. Those who do develop symptoms may experience cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea.
Legionnaire's disease can be treated with antibiotics, such as azithromycin or ciprofloxacin.

    Ages affected
    0-2 Extremely rare
    3-5 Extremely rare
    6-13 Extremely rare
    14-18 Extremely rare
    19-40 Very rare
    41-60 Rare
    60+ Rare

Critical: consult a doctor for medical advice

Now that I feel much better, as best I can tell I probably did get some sort of mild virus, most likely from running the room ac on full blast nonstop as I like to do. I stayed in the tower and apparently one of the specific floors that appears to have been affected. The symptoms I got were very similar to the few times in life when I got food poisoning, only unlike those prior times I cannot trace the illness to anything that I ate. In fact, I am very careful about what I eat nowadays. I guess I should be grateful we busted the team tourney early which caused me to check out and leave town earlier.

My overall opinion now is that the risk of getting anything serious is very low, particularly since Caesars/Rio is now (finally) treating the problem. Nothing worse than the "Commerce flu" or whatever they call it at the WSOP. Of course if you had asked me last Thursday when I thought I was having a heart attack/stroke, my opinion would probably be much different.

GL to Daly and all in the tourneys and I wouldn't worry about this issue anymore.

And some chick went viral on FB after posting a video of her bed at the MGM having bed bugs in it:

    https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/fo...d-bugs.142253/

the people in that thread are skeptical of the woman's claims (hotel litigation is a big business in Vegas), but a good rule of thumb is to make sure to check your sheets when you check in to ensure no critters are in your bed(s).
