Visiting Vegas for the first time - Looking for tips for hotels, shows, etc.

Visiting Vegas for the first time with the girlfriend at the end of July. Looking for advice on where to book our hotel and what shows to see. Basically, the girlfriend wants to visit to see the shows and relax by the pool and I want to play poker after midnight while she's sleeping. Something on the strip would be good.

The best value is Monte Carlo. Connected with the Aria, so you don't have to go outside. T Mobile stadium right across the street. Eat @ EggSlut in Cosmo if you love egg sandwiches. Any Cirque shows will be good but definitely do the one with the water.

Flamingo or The Linq are cheap and are mid-strip. You could walk over to the Bellagio after she zonks out and play there.

Be ready to purchase a child proof bag and careful with the bait and switch. They show you high quality and come back with pre packaged garbage claiming it's what you just saw.

Agree that Monte Carlo is a good value. My sister just stayed there in February and she liked it. If you download some of the MyVegas apps or play the game on Facebook, within a day or two you can accumulate enough points to redeem for special rate offers...my sister did this and got Monte Carlo for like $40/night Sun-Thurs ( plus resort fees of course). Looking at the app today here were some of the special weekday/weekend rates...add $20-40 nightly resort fee, depending on the property. There are also a limited number available so they aren't guaranteed to be available all days and times...they'll show you a rate calendar with availability before you redeem the points:

    MGM Grand $59/$85
    Mandalay Bay $75/$109
    Mirage $69 ( probably Sun-Thurs only)
    Monte Carlo $40/$65
    New York New York $52/$75
    Luxor $39/$68
    Excalibur $29/$60
    Vdara $85/$125

Monte Carlo is a dump. Casino floor smell like vomit. If your trying not to spend a lot, mandalay bat is pretty good. Just have to walk or taxi to iither spots. But worth the trouble. Pho is also fine and convienant. Nice is aria and worth the cost. Same for Bellagio or Wynn.

Best show is MJ at MB. Still really like Mystere if you have never seen a cirque show or ka.

ill echo tellafriend...aria is top notch...

id also give a look to vdara...stayed there last year, was right next door to aria...all rooms are suites...only "drawback" is no casino on property but aria is literally right next door and you can probably get vdara for cheaper...

If your first time in Vegas go all out

Wynn Tower Suites or Aria Sky Suites ftw

You will make it back at the tables so basically a free roll

Bare minimum get Aria standard room and even that is roughing it. Not much better than camping imo

Great thing about Vdara, as someone pointed out, is that it 60 seconds away from Aria. But it is also close to Bellagio. It also is quiet and doesn't have a bunch of kids running around that are getting drunk in Vegas for their first time, no smoking etc.

Also, all Cirque shows are boring as fuck (Beatles was only one i liked). I rather watch the news in my room. I would go for a comedy show but those can be hit or miss

Totally agree of all the 3rd tiered hotels mentioned Mandalay is best value.

Aria is Aces in my book. Plus if you call the poker room manager you can get a Poker rate. To qualify you and your girl need to play 5 hours of cash or play in the nightly tournament. I got $1400 of rooms for $600 and two $125 entries for my wife and I when I was out in December. Would do again.

If The OP or his girl are fans of the Beatles "Love" is a must do.

Treasure Island, good location and rates are always reasonable.

Also Chada for Thai or Rollin Smoke for BBQ. They are off the strip but are above average in terms of quality of food for their cuisine. Check out my past LV threads for pics

I stay at the Cosmo. Ask for the Ben Affleck suite, its a wraparound with terrace facing the Bellagio fountains.

Monte Carlo is a good place to stay if you're visiting in 2006.

Aria with poker rate is the way to go.

I always stay at Paris cuz its in the middle of everthing. (No need for a car or cabs). I also like the fact that hallways to rooms are not very long and you rarely have to wait more than 30 seconds for an elevator. I recommend eating at Mon Ami Gabi on the patio to enjoy the Bellagio Fountains. Bally's is connected and has a free shuttle to Rio which is also across the street from Gold Coast and The Palms if you want to get some locals experiences. The tenors of rock n roll at Harrah's was very enjoyable and not too expensive. O is my fav of the cirque shows. The free tram that runs from Bellagio to South end of strip stops at Aria, Vdara and others if you want to tour several properties on the cheap. There is also one that runs between Treasure Island and Mirage. The pool at Paris is very nice and has cabanas for rent and a great spa but doesn't have poker room but Planet Hollywood next door does as does Bally's and all the other pokerrooms of note are within walking distance. Have a great time! and post a trip report.

I'll admit that sometimes hotels are a better idea than airbnb, and perhaps that's especially true for LV. Having written that, my wife and I have literally saved thousands of dollars by booking through airbnb and staying in people's homes, condos, campers, suites, mansions, cabins, a yurt, etc etc. And we've loved almost every experience.

(the only bad experience out of roughly 25 was an apartment in Manhattan. Bed was insanely hard, although description noted comfortable bed. The view and location made up for it, and the hard bed was endured for 2 nights, made more better w/extra blankets. Nonetheless, airbnb refunded out $$$ after the honest complaint was noted.)

A quick peek right now on the app:

    QFT

Heading to Vegas next friday 6/16, staying in a Tower Suite at Aria.

If anyone from the forum is in town, I'll buy them a buzz button marg at Cosmo, but I'll need a ride from the Airport.

Who the fuck would ever stay at Monte Carlo right now? It's under extensive renovation & the pool will be closed until next year where, when everything re-opens, it will be re-branded as the Park MGM. It's not just the pool, everything, & I do mean everything, is under renovation.

I had a reservation there for my April trip for $40/night with 2 FREE buffets/day where if you used them the room would be basically free & I elected to stay @ Aria for $95/night & it turned out to be a good choice & I've stayed at Monte Carlo several times & enjoyed it so I'm not a hater.

Check out www.smartervegas.com for some deals on hotel rooms.
