Ideas for inland Canada trip this summer?

Hello Canucks and others who have vacationed in Canada...

I have decided to take a summer trip to Canada.

I've been to Vancouver and southwest BC. I've been to Toronto, Quebec, and some of the island provinces/territories in the east. I've been to Niagara falls.

Where I have little-to-no experience is inland Canada -- namely eastern BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba.

    I realize that's a big area.

Would like some ideas for good vacation spots and scenic drives.

Anywhere with beautiful hiking areas would be nice, provided it's not too long or difficult (Ben will be there, and he's probably good for about 4 miles max.)

Off-the-beaten-path stuff would be especially cool, provided it's not too hard to get there (meaning I can drive a regular car there).

Do not want "touristy" stuff for the most part, though national/provincial parks would be good.

Please post your suggestions here. No trolling or junk posts.

Canadian $ has been holding for a long time in the 74c range, so this is a good time to travel there.

Canada Day here in Ottawa will be amazing (150 years). That being said good luck trying to lodging. Only other drawback in if you don't like crowds.

Canada Day is July 1, correct?

    Can't do it then. WSOP.

This trip will be sometime from July 20-August 17, in all likelihood.

    Yes, Banff looks likely.

I see I already made a thread I like this in January 2016, but never ended up taking that Canadian trip (stayed in California/Nevada last summer instead).

    But keep the suggestions coming.

Do not go to Manitoba or Saskatchewan.

Unless you want to find a cottage on a lake to chill.

I seem to recall someone talking about a beautiful drive between somewhere and Banff -- rated one of the most scenic drives anywhere.

    Where is this?

From what I'm looking at, there doesn't seem to be a lot to do there. So yeah, I think I'll probably focus on eastern BC and Alberta.

So like others have said skip Manitoba & Saskatchewan.

Calgary Stampede July7-16 (during WSOP though)

    Possible route...
Fly to Vancouver, rent a car.
    Drive to Kelowna, BC
Drive up through Vernon to Glacier National Park, BC
Cross into Alberta and see Lake Louise
Drive to Banff & Jasper, both in Alberta
Fly home out of Edmonton or Calgary, Alberta.

    Something like that anyways.

You've picked the right time of year to go but by late August it will cool down.

    I'd go in July.

What the hell is inland Canada? Is that specifying that you don't want to see Newfoundland?

But yeah like others said. Go to Banff. Your kid will love the gondola ride unless he doesn't.

Are there any realistic opportunities to see the northern lights in the area, even if it requires traveling more north?

Or is that unlikely in August?

Depends on solar activity more then anything but Ill be honest it unlikely baring a major solar flare.. The usual suspects for viewing are in 24hr sunlight or close to it for a couple months from now until end of July minimum and even then sun goes down barely (Its weird to watching the sun rotating in the sky when it doesnt really set).. Went on a fishing trip many years ago at a place north of 60 and yeah fortunately I was used to sleeping with sunlight vs my dad and grandfather who werent.. Definitely would agree theres some interesting stuff in Calgary and Edmonton if you choose to go that far north... Also agree theres jackshit in Saskatchewan (which is why Brock Lesnar loves it on his huge farm on the Canadian side of the border north of MN) and Manitoba as well.. Theyre about as exciting as North& South Dakota sans the Black Hills and Montana (sans Doyle Brunson).

Check out those 2 google maps I made for you in the other thread. The drive is between Banff & Jasper via the Icefields Parkway.

If you're gonna be around Jasper in August I'd suggest a trip to Rearguard Falls that is just west of Mount Robson on highway 16. It is the last set of falls the salmon can navigate on their spawn up the Fraser River. It's a nice easy hike from the parking lot & is just spectacular if you're there when they're jumping lots.

The road between banf and jasper is spectacular a must see.

Saskatchewan is also must see Drumheller to serch for fossles and some parts of the Quapel vally are worth a look, Northern Saskatchewan is stuck in the 70s with lakes and rental Cabin. Sick fishing for Northern Pike scary prehistoric fish, tasty though.

Druff, I'm a born and raised Calgarian who spends a ton of time in the mountains of Alberta and BC. If you aren't interested in touristy stay the fuck away from the Calgary Stampede, it's a giant tourist trap.

Book your hotels early if you are hitting up Banff, that's high season and they fill up. It's busy as hell in the summers there but still very worth the trip. You may also want to consider staying in Canmore. It's also pretty, but not quite as crazy as Banff.

Loads of great hikes in those areas. Very family friendly if you're bringing the little one. I'd recommend Heart Creek Trail and Johnson's Canyon. If you want more challenging hikes let me know and I can give you some tips.

If you want a bit less traffic I'd highly recommend Waterton. http://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/waterton. Just beautiful scenery and hiking. Get your hotels booked asap there as well. Close to Banff is Radium and Fairmont (2 hours drive away). Pretty areas out there and a couple of hot springs that can be a lot of fun for the family.

You taking the wife and kid?

Unless you're just doing mountain stuff....then just don't go?

Its like the Canadian version of "I'm going on vacation to Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma....what should I do?"

He specifically said he's interested in hikes and off the beaten path scenery. Alberta is loaded with just that and the USD to CAD exchange is amazing for Americans right now. This area and the timing seems perfect for what he is looking for. Banff, Canmore, Waterton, Jasper is pretty tough country to beat if you enjoying hiking and the mountains.
