    NCAA Football playoffs???

"selecting the championship game participants after the bowls are played instead of creating a pair of national semifinals"

Wow, so they vote for the final 2 after the bowl games? Instead of voting for Top 4 and battling it out?
We finally get them to agree to a playoff but they figure out another way to NOT have it decided on the field.

BCS commissioners reach consensus on playoff plan

The BCS commissioners reached a consensus on a model four-team seeded playoff that will be presented to the university presidents next week for approval.

The commissioners who have been working on reshaping college football's postseason to create the first major college playoff met for four hours and emerged together with a commitment to stand behind a plan. Though they were stingy about providing specifics of that plan.

They said they were reluctant to share too many details before they had a chance to discuss them with their bosses, the university presidents. Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott did say the two semifinals would be worked into the existing major bowls and the site of the national championship game will be bid out similarly to the Super Bowl.

The BCS Presidential Oversight Committee meets Tuesday in Washington, and the commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick all stressed that ultimately the decision lies with their bosses. And that the presidents will have more than just one model to talk about.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 presidents have both expressed support for the so-called plus-one model, which gives the BCS a new look by selecting the championship game participants after the bowls are played instead of creating a pair of national semifinals, which is what the commissioners came away from the latest meeting in Chicago backing.

"I'm comfortable both of those will still be discussed at the president's meeting," Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said.

He added: "I think we're very unified. There are issues that have yet to be finalized."

My understanding is that the committee will select the four teams and seat them. Those semi games will be played in the traditional bowls. The winners will play for the championship at the site of the highest bidder.

Better THEN nothing, and it will be much easier to amend/add games once the psychological playoff barrier is breached.

I assume that #1 and #2 would never play each other in a bowl. This plan only really makes sense if you match up the top 4 teams in two of the bowl games...making it a 2 round playoff like everyone wants. That gives the 3 and 4 teams a chance to win their way into the championship game. But if 1 played 5, 2 played 6, and 3 and 4 played each other in bowls- then the 3 and 4 teams still have to root for a top team to lose in order to get a shot. An undefeated #3 could still get shut out, which is the scenario that a playoff is supposed to avoid. It just gives the 1 and 2 teams one more solid challenge before the national championship.

Pro football is clearly an infinitely better entertainment product.

EDIT- If Devidee is correct, then it really is the 4 team playoff that everyone wants, with the first round being played as bowl games.

Great, so the national championship game will be the Jerrybowl every year in Dallas. Small step forward. Eventually when they get to 8 teams, with higher seeded home games, we'll have it right, and I'll be 73 years old.

For the record, Devidee's plan is the way to go. (Or at least the best option of these 2.)
This proposal sounds like they are going to do the bowls the same way as now, and then vote on 2 teams to advance to the + 1 game. Which puts voting power back in old crusty sport writers who can only watch so many games.

EDIT: This paragraph sounds more like what we want, , the presidents want the + 1, and the commissioners want the Final 4 format.

2 rules I would institute right now, no wild card, no independents, if you can't win your league (I don't care how tough it is) you can't win the NCAA,
And being a Chico St Alum, I've only really followed Notre Dame, so the independent is as unbiased as it gets,

No, that's not the plan being proposed. The plan is to choose the 4 teams prior to the bowls, seat them and then play those two games in the bowls.

The winners advance to the championship game.

Devidee is right according to what they were announcing at the press conference on ESPN. It is a step in the right direction, but as usual since it is dependent on human voting there will eventually be an outrage directed towards it.
