So I'm not going to go into a discussion of why this is a scam, because the video makes it obvious.
It's certain that the hot chicks in these ads are never writing these guys. Instead, the correspondences are likely being written by men or older women who are either working for the service ("A Foreign Affair") or a third-party contractor they hire to round up these girls in other countries like Ukraine.
I was actually surprised they came up with this chick to finally meet him once he complained. I was almost sure he was looking at pics bought from a Ukranian modeling agency, and these women were unavailable to actually meet. In fact, that probably was the case, and they must have forked over additional money at the last minute to bring her to meet him (in a controlled environment with others present), in order to keep the fish on the hook.
Those "socials" were interesting. If you look closely, it appears the women are having too good of a time and too eager to dance with these ugly middle aged dudes. While you can surmise that these are perhaps green card gold diggers, I actually think it's more likely these are just paid partygoers who are told to socialize with the men, act like they're having fun, and then disappear off into the sunset when the night is over.
I am not surprised that this guy is a government worker in Virginia (presumably the federal government). The government employs a lot of people who are lazy, gullible, incompetent, etc. Many times the government ends up hiring people who would be unemployable in private industry. It's also very difficult to get fired from a federal government job. Even if you're a horrible employee, they tend to either just tolerate you or shift you around to other positions.
I guess it's possible that this guy is okay at his job, and just horrible in managing his personal affairs. I mean, we see that with a lot of poker players, including some really good ones.
Oh, and while I don't like blaming the vicitm, these guys are also somewhat doing this to themselves. This guy is 46, looks over 50, and is obese. He also seems to have interests such as video gaming and sci-fi which might turn off some women.
Okay, fine, so he's not a great catch, and he knows it. Still, he has a stable job, a home, and seems fairly mild-mannered.
I can guarantee that plenty of unattractive women around his age would be happy to be with him. In fact, just the stable job and the seemingly calm demeanor should probably be enough to get an okayish woman his own age, even one who is better looking than he is.
Instead, he chases this fantasy that he will be with an "Angelina Jolie lookalike" 20 years his junior, and writes to these beautiful women abroad.
So basically instead of accepting their limitations and being with a woman more in their own league, they reach for the stars and try to hook up with a hot foreign model, and then they're surprised when it turns out they were taken for a ride.

So being new to the Russian Bride, or Foreign Bride search I decided to join AFA or A Foreign Affair just to kind of see what it was all about. I paid the $99 for the Platinum membership, which allowes me to email up to 100 girls through their system. Now it says that when I email the girl, that it will go through their system and the girl will receive MY PROFILE , ALL MY INFO, Along with my pics, and my email. At this time the girl can look at my profile and if interested ACCEPT my email and reply to me. Now the emails are directly from the girls email to mine. AFA is no longer involved one my email has been accepted by her and she replies. Keep in mind I am going into this deal with my eyes wide open and not really expected a whole lot, more so doing it for fun, and starting to explore the foreign bride scene.
So I send out 75 or so emails to girls profiles that I find attractive, some are in Russia, Ukraine, China, and South America. 75 emails go out. probably half of those are ACCEPTED and out of those two girls emailed me back. At first the emails were bland and generic, but then as I emailed back and forth with the girls over the next few days they loosened up and told me about them some and sent me a couple of 'family' safe pics, no nudity or 'victoria secret' pics. Just regular pics that seemed normal. WHAT I FOUND STRANGE was that THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT ME, HAD NOT SEEN MY PICS, HAD NOT SEEN MY PROFILE , which is the whole point of using AFA to kind of help weed out the girls that are not interested in you.
SO I THINK THAT THE PLATINUM MEMBERSHIP FOR THE MOST PART IS A BUNCH OF BS AND BULL. I am goin to keep writing until i have sent about 500 emails to see if I get any hits for entertainment. BTW after just a couple of days of emailing the 'girls' they stopped emailing and fell off the face of the earth????? Hmmmm I am not surprised. LOL (Note the pics that the women sent me looked nothing like any of the profile pics of the girls i emailed)
NOW HERE IS THE REAL SCAM BEWARE BEWARE You can join AFA or Loveme.com for free. Then on the site after you log in, you have an INBOX, where supposedly women that have seen your profile and are interested in you can email you first. HERES THE CATCH. Even if you are a 'platinum' member if you use the mail system that is the 'inbox' on the afa site. To Open and email from a girl costs 4.99-7.99 per email. GEEEEZ to reply to her through the AFA system is 5.99-7.99 and 2.99 for each pic you attach. GEEEZ As you can see this could get very expensive in a hurry.
So for fun I opened a couple of the emails that were send TO ME from these INTERESTED girls. LOL All of the emails I opened were so general that they could be to anyone. There was nothing in any of the emails from any of the girls that would let me think they had seen my profile or even knew my name.??? The reason for this AFA mail system is supposedly some of the girls dont have email and AFA CLAIMS to let these girls come to their local office and AFA translates for you. Hmmmm for girls that have on their profiles to be college grads and speak fair english, I would think that they could at least have their own email address and not need a translator. ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS IT S A SCAM and Im sure for some older guys that are not internet savvy it seems legit. But anybody that has any common sense can see quick that this is a HUGE HUGE SCAM. I mean you could spend $100 in a few minutes just opening up a couple of emails and replying to them. Why in the heck would it cost 2.99 to attach a picture to an email anyway. LOL SCAM SCAM
Now I cannot speak on the TOURS that AFA offers. They promote heavily taking a TOUR to any of the cities that they operate in and meet hundreds of girls in a matter of a week. Tours go from $1500-$4500 depending on what country you go to and how long you stay. I would be hesitant to go on one of these tours because of the lies and the scam that they are running on the website it makes me not want to trust these people.
I ordered the AFA love me .com tour dvd, and it cost me like $10 with shipping. Within a few days I got a discreetly packaged dvd. I took the paper cover off and the dvd case looked almost like the cover of a porn dvd. LOL. No wonder they covered it with white paper. Anyway I opened it and watched it. LOL The editing and the footage looks like it was from ten years ago. Not very many of the girls look anything like the ones on the website . So IDK if i would be willing to trust these guys and pay them money to do a tour or not. I think I will speak with my friends russian wives and see if they have any relatives that could make a good match. LOL
Just be careful and KEEP YOUR EYES WIDE OPEN AND COMMON SENSE ABOUT YOU WHEN ON THE INTERNET AND LOOKING FOR A FOREIGN BRIDE. So far my own experience and my research has NOT yielded a legitimate mail order bride service. There may not even be one out there.

I would imagine a lot of these international dating/meeting type of sites are not legit and prey on lonely Americans like this guy who have dreams of bringing one of these girls over and wifing them.
What is amazing is all the signs are there for this guy yet he can't get away because he is too emotionally invested (and financially).
He's not even close to the first person to fall for this shit and certainly won't be the last.
Typically I don't feel bad for people with no self control, personality, etc. Or people who fall for such obvious scams. But goddamn this guy is literally living a fucking nightmare. Literally my biggest fear in life is becoming this guy, so I do feel bad for him.

A successful guy i know in my hometown just did something similar. He owns his own insurance agency. Probably worth several million. He's old. Like 70. i know him through casino junkets. He is a big drinker. His ex said she'd hear ice swirling in a glass in the middle of the night - he would wake up and enjoy a swig of his scotch. Anyway, he gets divorced. Less than a year later he goes to Costa Rica where i think he already had a place. Meets some chick - would have been already set up i suspect, and suddenly he's married bringing her back to live with him here. Of course they are divorced in less than a year and she gets some of his $ and can live here now.
Certain things make smart men stupid.

Yeah I did a bit more looking into this A Foreign Affair operation, and they seem more like a shady affiliate of a shady network of foreign bride businesses abroad.
So it looks like they contract with these foreign bride businesses in various countries, and they split the proceeds in some way.
It seems that the "tours" (like the one they show this guy going on) are on the more legit side, as they really do attempt to introduce people to women looking to marry them for money and/or citizenship.
However, unfortunately that also spawned the e-mail scam part of it, where men who want to do it from the comfort of their own home are tricked into sending and receiving expensive messages back and forth with "interested women", who in reality are just template copy-pasters working for the shady foreign service.
A Foreign Affair (based in Phoenix) is very aware of this, but obviously they don't give a shit because they profit big from this scam. So they let these chumps get scammed by the e-mail crap (collecting a healthy percentage of the proceeds), and then "remove the profile" if they get complaints. Basically it's a negative check-off scam -- where a company scams a large number of people, yet is very willing to issue refunds to those who complain. The scam works because a lot never complain, and many don't even realize they were scammed.
The problem occurs when one of these chumps falls in love with a woman in the e-mail scam (despite her cold, generic, and very terse e-mail exchanges), and then actually flies to Ukraine or wherever to try to meet the girl. This probably doesn't happen often, and when it does, they can usually distract the guy with, "Oh but look at the hundreds of beautiful women at this party! Forget about her!"
