Went to Deadspin, and outside of like 5 people on the latest list, I really had no idea who 90% of these people were. I am not an ESPN dork, but I watch it like 5 hours a week or so for general programming outside of games. I guess I never realized how many hosts they actually had, but it makes sense. They were always going to like two people here, three people there, etc....On an NFL Sunday there were like 20 on-camera people involved. I never thought about it until this article.
If they lay off 100 people @ $200,000 salaries on average, that is $20M right there, Factor in benefits, its likely $30M in total annual savings. All on people nobody will ever miss. You can see why they did this. Nobody is not going to watch ESPN because Trent Dilfer got booted, that is for sure. I always wonders why some spare QB/one hit wonder got some much airtime anyway.
Here is the latest list and they keep on rolling:

No MMA people but then again they probably pay them in Reeboks gear and let them check their suits out of wardrobe for weddings and funerals.

"America is not so much a nightmare as a non-dream. The American non-dream is precisely a move to wipe the dream out of existence. The dream is a spontaneous happening and therefore dangerous to a control system set up by the non-dreamers." -- William S. Burroughs
no way in hell they're saving that much...look at who they're laying off...a lot of their .com writers/content providers...again thread title is misleading...their biggest cuts dollarwise were probably werder, punch, crawford, mccarthy, sire, kanell, and possibly dilfer and Glanville...if those content providers for .com were making 200k people need to reevaluate what theyre doing career wise...
they probably saved a ton of salary when berman "retired"...
Well the list has just started, I have no idea, but Werder and Punch were probably making half/mil a year just out of seniority. I am just guessing on the total nut, but regardless I was watching the NFL show one morning earlier this year and there where 8 guys in studio running a play. All "talent", mostly former players. They actually simulated a '4 on 4' play and tossed a two yard pass in studio and faked tackled each other. It was painful to watch, Mark Brunell was tossing a football to some former random tight end in studio.
I was like what the fuck is this? 8 guys in suits running a simulated plan in a studio? Not saying I predicted 100 layoffs, but give me a break that is one bloated fucking budget and you can see why people are getting blown out of there. Good ride while it lasted.
100% on NFL countdown...those shows are just money pits when you don't have a desk you just have like a picnic table to get all the guys to fit on...I like your read on werder/punch...those guys were the biggest nut outta all the ones I listed...half a mill is probably just about right for each...
I spoke to a friend today who used to work at ESPN in their field marketing department. He was never on TV but coordinated advertisers at the ESPN live events. He said ESPN was a great place to work and knows quite a few of those that were laid off. He did say things last year got monumentally stressful because everyone knew ESPN vastly overpaid for the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc... but the thinking of management was the games were by far the most important advertising generator and they could wheel out just about anyone to fill air time.
He quit because he was promised a promotion and they eliminated the position he was going to move in to. He basically saw the writing on the wall, and when he left they never filled his position. He theorizes he would have been let go anyway even though he got a great review. He said Mike and Mike were two really good guys to work with and never complained despite being overpaid stars who could have been vanity cases if they wanted to.
I wonder how this will affect ESPN Insider.
I was always too cheap to pay for it, until I found a loophole where you could subscribe to their shitty magazine for $8/year and get Insider for free. So that's what I've been doing for the last several years.
just checking in to make sure Barry Melrose and his Mullet are still employed....

Except for live programming I didn't really watch ESPN when the "talent" was white males, and I am going to continue not watching now that it is black females. So meh.
But it will suck if the Insider stuff for NFL and college FB isn't as good, which will probably be the case, cause it was the local guys who are all getting canned who provided most of the Insider stuff I am guessing.
Also, there was some pretty good CFB betting material on ESPN Chalk I really enjoyed, that I hope remains.
I didn't really see any of the army of play by play or color commentators for live games getting canned. Looks like if you want to survive in the sports industry moving forward that might be the avenue to go, as opposed to journalism or studio shows.
Of course may need another job on the side. Hard to imagine a college FB play by play guy is making a living working 15 days/year.

For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Generally smart cuts this time around, Stark and Werder were the only two I was surprised by. ESPN still remains a LOLfailchannel nowadays; always behind the times, and the one time they were ahead of the times...it ultimately led to a "whose dick is bigger" contest between them and Simmons....and Simmons made out pretty well after that firing, despite the failed TV show.
The only people i read on ESPN anymore are two of Simmons's guys, Barnwell for NFL and Lowe for NBA. Everything else is trash. Not even sure how Sportscenter is still a thing in the digital age, outside of just being default programming in bars late night/early morning.
feel the same way on stark/werder also katz for CBB as well...always thought he was a decent guy...think i said earlier, the hacking off the whole hockey crew outside of Melrose seems suspect...I mean I get it hockey isn't popular, but they are a sports network...wheres that coverage now gonna come from?
I cant imagine that simmons thing was a good move...think he had his own mini empire, but yup dick swinging 101..
I don't get the shift on the 6pm sportscenter to a sports/entertainment hybrid...always thought that show was supposed to set up the night ahead...
I still don't get the whole 'moving to a digital platform' and hacking off a chunk of their .com writers...
looking forward to britt mchenry's first porn in like 12-18 months...
If they want to focus on digital they should fix their app. It's the buggiest, crashingest piece of shit ever.
HILLARY WON
Digital is just a rationalization to cover for the ridiculous MNF deal @ 1.9billion. MNF & Thurs are such a fail. They are locked until 2021
That price is double what NBC CBS etc pay for Sat & Sunday programming.
Disney needs to sell and they are cutting costs.
The MTV comparison in this thread was god.
If the guys who got cut have talent and a computer you'll hear from them again
Last time I watched ESPN a ton lately was right be fore NCAA basketball tournament. They must have had 50 guys on air over those few days. I could easily be wrong but I don't see a single one of them on the cut list. Did ESPN really not fire any of that massive group of college basketball announcers/pundits?
