    Bad Motor Racing accidents

This one happened in the UK at the weekend. It's a shocker.

He survived it but had to have both legs amputated. Only 17yo.

    No gore involved.

GoFundMe got him 500k so far, but doubt he's arsed about money just now.

We could turn it into a "what's the worst live gore you've witnessed thread"

Mine coming outa school and watching some guy crash into a parked van. He came through the front screen and smashed into said van. (rip) as the poor cunt practically didn't have any brain left inside his head.

Any enthusiasm I may of had for gore ended that day.

    Random thoughts ...

Homogenization of race cars and engines primarily for safety killed auto racing for me. There's no difference.

Racing used to drive technology advancements. Not so much anymore. Let's fix that.

What would interest me is driverless electric vehicles. A no limit class. You address two hot new arenas: driverless cars and electric vehicles. Sex up both.

My gut hates the idea of electric vehicles. I don't believe I will ever own one. However, I grudgingly acknowledge the instant torque etc. Torque is where the fun is. A shitty Tesla pretty much rules now. You see the work Porsche & BMW are doing. It's where new performance can be mined. It's undeniable.

This kind of racing might change my attitude which is the commercial point of racing. Race on Sunday and buy on Monday.

I find it interesting or ironic that never before has so much effort been made in the area of exhaust note tuning. The sound the engine makes exactly at the moment that serious performance electric vehicles are on the horizon.

I find it fun to search for signs of the apocalypse. Loud exhausts. Dodge Demons.

I love the late 60's muscle car era. The Pontiac GTO Judge, 442, Road Runner & Super Bee marked the end of the performance car for 30+ years. Insurance and environmental police killed 'em. They flew too close to the sun.

I think we are at a similar crossroads and it's sad.

Anyway, with no driver in the cockpit, you are free to pursue unbridled performance and still enjoy the crashes.

Not just safety in racing & road vehicles which has changed. Everything related to safety in everyday life has changed, and continues to do so at an alarming rate.

They say Political Correctness has gone mad. But Health & Safety isn't too far behind.

Next generation of passenger planes will see parachutes stuffed under the inbuilt ejector seats.

I would fully support parachutes on planes though tbf.

try some RC Car racing if you're into driverless cars. because that's what you're saying.

hell, strap some servos into a tesla and make it a giant RC car.

Give me group B all day. THAT IS RACING

I strongly recommend against posting gore, it ends badly.

Some number of humans enjoy going fast regardless of how the speed is achieved or risk involved. Downhill skiing, horse riding, piloting Reno Air Race style, bicycle racing when young, pushing whatever motorized car or cycle you've drove since getting a license. All the sounds, smells, visual, seat of the pants, inner ear inputs result in a big grin.

Sanlmar, F1 organization has a class for electric cars but still drove by peeps and boring. Check out some MotoGP vids on YouTube. Cycles vary quite a bit. Driver still makes all the difference, weather changes strategy, tires go away. "The Doctor" Rossi usually fan favorite, been competitive for a decade or so. The podium drivers speaking afterwards is cool. Often diminutive teens full of enthusiasm. Engineering concern is primarily not creating power but getting power to the ground in a controllable fashion.

in the good old days when MotoGP came to Laguna Seca I would watch from the shade of the big tree halfway through the corkscrew. Winner would stop there on victory lap and toss helmet and gloves into crowd. The drive back to Santa Clara was a 100 mph train of bikes on the shoulder, cops actually closed side roads for us gear heads.

Maybe your right. Might not watch that either.

What I will watch is motorcycle racing. Isle of Man is on frequently and I give that a look.

The TT is insanity, but due to everybody racing the clock passing duels don't happen often. MotoGP has battle royals for top ten slots. Wild divergence of lines, bumping, and when drivers do go down they often walk away cause it's a real track where speed is lost by sliding before hitting anything solid and EMTs are present. World Superbike and AMA Superbike offer up some great racing as well. The Brits giving the play by play in this WSB vid do good as lead changes 5-6 times on last lap. Brit on red and yellow, yank on blue and white.

I don't know how this thread turned into a debate on motorcycle racing.....

but I do have kind of a story.

I worked for a messenger company owned by this surly old dude named Mike. Mike grew up riding dirt bikes, and one day in the early 80's one of his friends told him he was getting paid to deliver shit on his enduro-bike. So, Mike did the same thing, and went downtown and became a messenger for a company called Cannonball. They were the only ones back in the day offering motorcycle delivery (which not as fast as a bike, is def faster than a fucking car).

Before mike was a messenger he raced motocross. I'm in his office one time, and I see a picture of him next to another guy with "Van Winkle" on his jersey. I jokingly asked him if this was Vanilla Ice. It totally was.

Another great motorcycle story was when the White Sox hosted the All Star game at Comiskey Park. Cannonball contracted with the Sun Times to have the motorcycle's bring film from the game to the Sun Times building to be developed. They closed down part of the expressway for it, so that news crews could get too and from downtown fast. So they got to race down the expressway on their endurobikes bringing the film. He said it was some of the craziest riding he ever did on a bike.

The best nights and conversations are where one subject begets another.

    Enduro bikes....

I'm a car guy and I love speed. Just sold a Camaro SS. You can't race on the street really. It's just the idea of the performance. Pretty much a waste though.

I bought a CR125 when I was 30. Never rode dirt bikes before. Later I picked up a used CR250 someone tricked out. Still preferred the light weight 125.

Used to race in gravel pits with some other guys informally. Absolutely the most fun I had competitively since college. You are 100% "in the moment". A pure escape. Always a little scared. The comradery between the guys for having survived and being totally exhausted was great too.

I loved hill climbing ridiculous verticals - especially in sand pits.

    Table tops & endos

I will probably never match that kind of fun again.
