SEATTLE - Police say a truck driver drove from Seattle to Deerfield, Massachusetts earlier this week while high on at least three different drugs.
The Deerfield Police Department says the driver admitted to using crystal methamphetamine, LSD and cocaine. The man appears to have driven non-stop, the Police Department says.
His final destination was somewhere on the East Coast.
Luckily, no one was injured.
Officers say they responded to reports of a despondent truck driver at a Circle K convenience store near Greenfield Road Tuesday.
The driver was locked out of his truck, combative and showing signs of drug use, police say.
Officers say the man admitted to using drugs and say was a clear danger to himself and others. He was taken to Franklin Medical Center.
The man's truck and trailer were impounded and brought to a truck stop for a full inspection by the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
Police say the man is being charged with Operating Under the Influence of Drugs. Police say he will be facing many additional charges by State Police Commercial Vehicle Section.

In all seriousness, self-driving truck tech will most likely be implemented in phases, with at first the tech doing the mundane portions of driving the truck (such as highway driving) and the driver taking over in more decision-sensitive portions of the trip (such as city or local driving). When you consider that most major accidents involving trucks occur on highways (at higher speeds and because of driver distraction and/or fatigue), implementing computer-contolled driving in that portion of the trip is likely to significantly reduce the risk of catastrophic truck accidents assuming that the tech is sufficiently developed.

What most folks who aren't truckers don't understand is that driving the truck over the road is only a portion of what OTR truck drivers have to do to complete the trip. Other aspects of the job include hooking and dropping trailers, inspecting truck and trailer for road-worthiness, working with shipping and receiving staff to get the loading and unloading done at facilities, backing and removing the trailer from docks (some of which are in crazy-tight facilities), securing cargo with load bars, straps, etc., verifying seals and paperwork, dealing with discrepancies or damaged goods at the receiving, monitoring the condition of the truck and trailer while in transit, working with others to get necessary over-the-road repairs implemented...

And personally, I would welcome self-driving tech be developed and implemented if safe enough. It would reduce fatigue and the likelihood of dumb accidents like this one:
