PokerStars handed €400,000 fine for illegal gambling in the Netherlands

Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has fined The Stars Group €400,000 (£353,442/$439,500) for operating without a licence in the country, via the PokerStars.eu domain.

The KSA carried out an investigation into the PokerStars.eu site during the second half of 2018 and identified a number of factors that showed the site was targeting Dutch consumers.

In its findings, the KSA said the site was accessible from the Netherlands despite The Stars Group not holding a licence in the country, while customers were able to deposit funds using iDEAL, an online payment method only available in the Netherlands.

Other factors included an in-site contact form published in Dutch language and the mention of two Dutch problem gambling organisations. In addition, the Netherlands was not mentioned in a list of countries from which gambling via the website was not permitted.

The KSA also noted that the Netherlands classes poker as a game of chance, and only Holland Casino is allowed to offer real-money poker services at one of its land-based sites.

They need to start clamping down on illegal gambling especially in Canada and Mexico.

These sleazy internet gambling companies deserve to be banned, fined and shutdown.

Exclusive: B.C. gambling regulator suggests ads for shady poker, sports sites be pulled

Jaggi-Smith estimated there are over 2,200 unregulated websites accessible by British Columbians that compete with B.C. Lottery Corporation’s PlayNow.com. She estimated the industry is worth $50 billion worldwide and $640 million in B.C. The sites, however, lack consumer protection, technical integrity and responsible gambling checks and balances.

“You’re probably familiar with a number of these companies, or at least their names — PokerStars, Party Poker, Draft Kings, Bet888, Bodog — these are all companies that operate gambling websites legally in other jurisdictions,” said the speaking notes. “There are many reasons why we believe Canadians choose to gamble in the unregulated market — from the ability to place bets on single sports events to having a larger variety of choice when it comes to operator. We do know that many who gamble in the unregulated market are unaware of the risks involved.”

Jaggi-Smith said government bears the negative social consequences and pays through its health and justice systems for addicts and criminals who gamble on unregulated sites.

Revenue from unregulated sites goes into “private pockets,” often located offshore, to benefit shareholders and executives. Jaggi-Smith showed a picture of Calvin Ayre, the Saskatchewan native who founded Bodog in Vancouver. She said at Ayre’s peak, his net worth was over US$1 billion.

And the truth comes out in the last sentence. It’s not about protecting the consumer it’s about squeezing more money for the government. Maybe if they offered decent software and didn’t rape players on rake they would have more customers but instead of fixing their shitty software and ridiculous rake it’s about shutting down competition like Quebec tried to do. Typical blind jackass politician. As usual the government doesn’t like competition for thievery.

I realise that this will be of little interest to Americans but I wonder where this leaves the only Pokerstars streamer worth watching, our man in Rotterdam, Lex Veldhuis.
