Doug Polk: Tom Dwan may have more massive debt to Haralabos Voulgaris

Doug Polk said in a video blog released Wednesday that when he was first starting out in poker he looked up to Tom Dwan, who was once one of—if not the—most feared online cash game players in the world.

These days, Polk isn’t a big fan.

In the blog, Polk said that Dwan, commonly known by his online moniker “durrrr”, could have a massive outstanding debt to one of the world’s most successful sports bettors.

According to Polk, some strong “evidence” points to Dwan being the person who owes Haralabos Voulgaris a “seven figure” amount of money. Voulgaris said a year ago that a player in the high-stakes poker community hasn’t made good on an old debt. He wouldn’t name the player.

video here; Polk starts off detailing the Durrr challenge fiasco/Jungleman debt, and goes into his Haralabob theory at the 6:57 mark:

Dwan has barely been in the USA (if at all but I think he was for family stuff) the past couple years. I'd guess Dwan owes more people money then we are aware of because people felt he was good for it, which he probably was until Black Friday but any old or new loans/debts he had after that good luck getting him to pay back.

Rumors floated around Dwan owed a ton to people playing in those big games in Macau and you'd have to believe that to be more the case them hill ballin outta control otherwise settling up with Voulgaris and working something out with Jungleman wouldn't be a problem if Dwan was still rich.

if (obviously BIG IF since this is speculation) he booked haralabob's bets himself instead of setting them off to a bookie he's a bigger dumb shit than those people playing the OFC app for big money...

One of the most important rules of betting on credit is to not bury the guy you are gambling with. Beat him for a number he can pay and then stop gambling until he pays. Expecting a degenerate gambler to pay 7 figure debts on sports is stupid.

But was that back in the day when Dwan was winning big online and/or at least being paid well to play on Full tilt?

If the story is what it appears to be, Haralabob didn't think he was betting with Dwan.

He thought Dwan was just a go-between in order to place large bets.

It's likely that Haralabob felt that he wouldn't be able to get large action if betting as himself, so he got Dwan to do it for him. When the bets won, it appears Dwan either kept the money or simply never placed them (hoping to keep the money if Haralabob lost -- essentially freerolling him), and vanished.

For those saying, "Booking bets yourself against Haralabob is moronic", it's actually not all that moronic if you're a scammer looking to freeroll him. If you're going to collect when he loses and not pay when he wins, the skill of the bettor only matters in the probability that your plan fails. If your plan fails, you just run off, so you're not really risking much except your reputation.

that's why its dumb...if he was taking NBA bets from haralabob what are the chances that haralabob was gonna lose over the course of a season? this isn't some square, this is probably the best there ever has been on NBA betting...if he was looking to freeroll the average bettor that would make total sense...

serious question - just how hard is it for Voulgaris to get action at a regulated US sportsbook that it would otherwise necessitate his need to go through someone like Dwan to place large bets? Is he getting better odds from those Chinese books? Is it for tax purposes? Do Vegas sportsbooks not take his bball action anymore?

I mean I realize it's not 100% safe to have a runner in Vegas if you can't be there yourself but I would say that any smart person should be highly skeptical at this point about Dwan's current financial well being.

Voulgaris made a lot of money selling his interest in WagerStreet. Who knows how much of his bankroll is from that.

SrslySirius is the difference between Doug Polk doing these buzzworthy videos and him ranting in front of horizontal blinds.

If Hellmuth is believed, I would think that's more indicative of Tom playing on the Triad's dime, perhaps to earn back money he owes them.

    He may still be broke.

what were those subtitles all about? some highlights: triad basements, americans will think it is satire, should we be talking about this on tv?

Who's the guy nicknamed "the chairman"? I'm just wondering if he would b ok with Durrrr stiffing him on a 7 fig debt or is he Triad or w/e they call them.
