Anyone know if Druff made it out of his secret location. I don't know for sure but I'd guess he was at Mammoth because that's where he says he likes to go.

You may know that skiing is a very sociable sport and while skiing you meet and socalize with people on and waiting for lifts, apres in the pub afterwards. I have skied by my self many times and it did not feel wierd or aquard by any means, quite the contrary... Once while skiing alone i happned uppon a group of Japanes skiers and stoped to see if they were lost, ended up they were doing shots of grandmarnier they indicated for me to join them, of course i did not hesitate. We ended up shit faced at sushi village having a great time....none spoke even one word of english, skiing is a mostly white sport if you know what i mean.
Also the unwritten rule of skiing is that there are no friends on a powder day. But that being said many people have died skiing deep powder by themselves after falling into tree wells or falling face first in deep snow, So some care has to be taken when doing this sport alone.

Even more frustrating was the fact that I realized that I forgot my skis about 32 miles into the drive home, and had to go all the way back. These were also a slow 32 miles, so I ended up traveling an extra 64 slow miles due to this blunder.
By the time I got home, I had driven more miles than I ever had in one day.
I had to take the trip myself. Benjamin is in school, and his mom works a regular job. They could not have taken such a long period of time off.
I was there for two purposes -- gambling AND skiing. The skiing ended up being a lot less than I thought, due to the bad weather. I only skied two days. I used to go skiing in the snow and high wind when I was younger, but as I got older I realized that I simply didn't enjoy skiing in bad weather like that, so now I only ski when it's nice out. I will say that the second day I skied (January 24) was quite cold, even though it was not snowy or windy. Was probably about 15 degrees on the mountain, which isn't terrible at first, but it builds up on you after a number of hours.
I don't mind skiing alone. Even when you're with friends/family, you're not interacting with them much when skiing down the hill, only on the chairlift. I'm fine hitting the slopes solo and enjoying both the skiing and the views/nature around me. Lake Tahoe is actually one of the more scenic areas to ski.
It was a bit lonely when I got back to the hotel, because I didn't know anyone there, and I was alone. I did do radio two of those nights, and the rest I just gambled or messed around on the internet. Was nice to come home, though. I missed my family.
Regarding the snow, yeah, it was pretty amazing.
Snowed most of the days I was there, and heavily.
I watched cars get buried from out my window.
I was smart enough to park my car in the Harvey's garage (across the street) and make sure it was in a spot not exposed to the outside. Sure enough, when I went to get it (after not touching it for a week), I saw most of the other vehicles covered with snow, as it had blown in.
I had never seen Heavenly (the ski resort) with so much snow, and the town itself was covered. They were still plowing days later.
Driving down US-50, I saw tall mounds of snow as low as 4,000 feet. Typically at 4,000, you're only seeing a thin layer of snow on the ground, if that.
This was the second-most January snow ever received in Tahoe on record (behind 1982-83), and Mammoth set an all-time record.
The drought in California will likely be over, unless February and March are unusually dry.
I do take ski trips alone, just not this one. Last year I went to Utah for a week. My first time there and I loved it.
No hotel sex, we have a cabin in Tahoe. Here is the view out my bedroom window. This photo is from last year. There is 2 more feet of snow right now at lake level than last year!
Hitting Mammoth on my way home.

Excellent idea to ski alone. Avoids the possibility of a Claudine Longet/Spider Sabich type disaster.
