Report: Goldman Sachs balks at putting up Las Vegas stadium money

Many in Las Vegas sensed the Oakland Raiders relocating here was too good to be true. They may be right.

ESPN reported this morning that Goldman Sachs is balking at providing funding in place of Sheldon Adelson, who on Monday withdrew his $650 million pledge for a stadium project to bring the Raiders to town.

KVVU Channel 5 in Las Vegas is reporting that Goldman Sachs had a deal to help finance the stadium with Adelson and the Raiders. With no Adelson, there is no deal, a Goldman Sachs representative told FOX5.

The Los Angeles Times, citing a person with direct knowledge of the proposed deal, also reported that the Goldman Sachs financing was contingent on Adelson's involvement.

“If [Adelson] doesn’t think it will pencil out for him, it won’t pencil out for Goldman Sachs or anybody else that thinks they want to step up to it,” Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani told the San Jose Mercury News. “I hate to say it, some of my concerns are starting to bear out. I don’t think Mr. Davis cared about either community, ours or Oakland. He’s using us against each other.”

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported this morning that Goldman Sachs, the stadium board’s backup plan if the Raiders and Adelson couldn’t agree to terms, was re-evaluating the proposed deal.

Shelburne reports Adelson has a lengthy business relationship with Goldman Sachs, and the investment firm could be underwhelmed with the lease terms the Raiders are seeking.

The Raiders would lease the stadium for $1 annually and the Las Vegas Stadium Authority would be on the hook for upgrades — two demands that surprised Adelson.

“The Oakland Raiders came before the Las Vegas Stadium Authority last week with a proposed lease agreement that has sent shockwaves through our community,” a statement from the Adelson family said. “It was certainly shocking to the Adelson family. We were not only excluded from the proposed agreement; we weren’t even aware of its existence.”

Adelson played an instrumental role in the effort to lure the Raiders, which eventually grew into a $750 million commitment of taxpayer money for the deal.

Despite the significant hiccup, Raiders owner Mark Davis reiterated his desire to move to Las Vegas.

“The Raiders deeply appreciate the efforts of the Adelson family to bring the Raiders to Las Vegas. We know this project could not have advanced to this point without them. The Raiders remain steadfast in honoring Mark Davis’ commitment to Governor Sandoval and the state of Nevada to pursue relocation to Las Vegas,” the team said in a statement.

To make the move, though, Sandoval’s office said, that Raiders would need to pony up $1.15 billion — their share and Adelson’s share in the initial proposal. The state agreed in a special session to provide $750 million from an increase in the hotel room tax. A smaller version of the facility could still be built to house UNLV football.
Sheldon Adelson never intended to put up $650 million of his own money to bring the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas.

He owns the 2nd largest convention space in Vegas, the Las Vegas Sands next to his Venetian Hotel.

He didn't want the City of Las Vegas and Clark County Commission to put up over $1 Billion to build on the site of the old Riviera to expand the Las Vegas Convention Center to compete with him.

Because they thought Adelson was putting up $650 million of his own cash, they decided to fund both the Stadium and the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Now they have to decide which one they want.

Odds that this $1.9 Billion Stadium ever gets built?

Maybe they can move back to LA, then Angelenos can have 3 teams they don't give a fuck about.

Then in 20 years move back to Oakland, back and forth like a migrating bird.

I can promise you Adelson was expecting to help fund the stadium but was snubbed by Raiders management... The Raiders thought they still have a solid commitment from GS, butttttttt something tells me that next hotel built for Adelson will be financed by a few loans originated by GS. I overheard some stuff today which was basically more or less "how fucking stupid is their(Raiders) advisory firm?" Etc etc etc (some stuff I won't ever put in writing but yeaaaaaaa someone fucked up!)

The Raiders fucked up by not including him...

That's an odd thing to say about the guy that just backed out on the deal. Somebody with the Raiders is a big time ass kisser.

Davis playing politics.. He knows Adelson has his hands in the pockets of several poltiicians including the AG of NV.. Davis NEVER wanted Adelson involved because he knew he'd be stuck in a deal with the Jewish Devil himself.. Davis knew if Adelson was involved it would somehow involve Adelson getting right of first refusal if and when the team is ever sold and he wasn't about to turn over the Raiders to that Jewish bastard or his family even if Hell froze over. Theres more then enough money in Vegas to get the stadium built without that dirty rotten crook nosed fucker involved.. Adelson only cares about what the fuck he's gonna get out of a deal nothingelse..

The Raiders can't associate and can't rent or lease a property or space from Adelson because he is a casino owner.

Roger Goodell still hates Las Vegas and doesn't want the NFL to associate with casino gambling.

Price for new NFL stadium...$1.9 Billion.

Price to fix/improve the roads around the new stadium around Mandalay Bay...$1.1 Billion.

    Fuck Oakland!!!

The fact that everyone outside of Oakland seems fine with this emphasises how far behind American sport is compared to Europe (or the ROTW for that matter)

How on earth can you have any sort of emotional connection with your team if they can just be packed up and dragged to another part of the country?

NFL is a minority sport in the UK. But this story is getting some attention here. People are sickened by it. I would die for my team, they're the most important thing in my life. A couple million others likely feel the same.

The lack of outrage ITT proves that you fuckers have no clue what it's like to truly love the badge that your team wears.

There's a reason American sport isn't taken seriously outside of the US. And this is a prime example.

I can't wait to see what a Shit Show the first New England @ Raiders game is going to look like. I'm 100% going I don't care if it's on Christmas.

Problem is the Raiders will in all likelihood have the worst home team advantage in sports. That stadium will be full based upon how well the visiting team travels. Patriots/Packers/Steelers games will be banged out. Good luck with the Bills games.

There will also be a lot of Angelenos coming to see the Raiders, to the detriment of the Chargers, and a lesser extent the Rams.

I think it's terrible but not a damn thing anyone can do about it. Even health care, literally who lives and dies, is up to he profit motive in the US of A, you think there will be any loyalty if a sports team owner can squeeze a few million more out of this or that city?

Whenever they play the New York teams, Pittsburgh, Dallas, New England, Philly, Green Bay, Seattle, Miami....its going to be a shit show. There will be fights. There will be less than 65% of Raiders fans at the games. And it will be hilarious.

It won't be long before the Raiders are playing 1-2 games every year out of the country, in Mexico or London or Beijing or wherever they go to next.

Oh, its a good deal for the city (although lol at Nevada legislature who is probably over run by fiscal conservative who wouldn't give a dime for most government services in the state, but will turn around and have the Raiders a $750 million stadium).

When those teams come into town, the cities businesses will make a killing. But, alot like "Jerry World" in Dallas, the place would become such a destination game since its so unique, that the Raiders will find when they have the ball late in the game down 7 in the 4th, they won't have much of a home field advantage as one might think. The Green Bay/Dallas playoff game last year almost had a neutral game feel to it, there were so many Packers fans there.

I just can't wait until Pacman Jones shoots up the Spearmint Rhino (again).
