The difference is that getting a taxi medallion is a pain in the ass and requires a good deal of effort, whereas any asshole can sign up to drive Uber.

So the quality of the average taxi driver is higher than the average Uber driver..
Let's disregard the fact that I literally don't know a single person that has taken a large sample of both taxi and Uber/Lyft rides and still prefers taxi's for a second and instead think about the three PFA members that are taxi drivers:

    Garret
    Spartan
    6 toed Pete

    The model of stability.

For wife, I opened the wallet up and only black for her. The uber lux "high end car" option doesn't really do it, still amateur drivers. The Black cars are professionals and I have had few problems with them. Also, they for the most part, don't bother you with unnecessary chit chat which I prefer.

In the old days (a year or two ago) the Uber drivers made for interesting conversations, and it was amazing how many cool people you would meet. That has changed for the most part, seems mostly beat up Camry's these days with down on your luck 20 somethings. I had a reformed street prostitute who found god talk my ear of one time, a car full of pot smoke one time, booze smell in the car another.... thus using Black more. We actually got rid of our second car with uber to fill in the gaps. I may go back to another car. Still undecided.
Have yiu had any issues with the route Uber drivers take? The few times I’ve used Uber (I usually use Lyft), the GPS they have sends them on bizarre somewhat circuitious routes.
Uber drivers can chose which navigation they want to use (uber, waze, google maps) in their app. The uber navigation is literal trash. It'll send you through unnecessary alleys and down roads that don't exist. Most drivers figure out not to use uber navigation and switch over to waze/gmaps very quickly

PLOL is spot on, I don't find the drivers (unlike the old cabby days where they try and take the long route) purposely drive around. They just follow whatever system they use. The Uber system tells drivers to pick me up in the alley out back. I have had a few noobs actually drive into the alley, I then call and tell them to come out front.

Founded three years before Lyft, Uber reached the one million rides per day mark in 2014 and as of a year ago was giving an average of 5.5 million rides a day. Uber just recently surpassed its five billionth ride.Jul 5, 2017-

Considering these #s the 103 sexual assaults is less than what i would think if I knew these #s

You'd think you could since you can pick their color. Charham always goes with black for his wife.

I also liked what he said about no talking. I always assumed the most awful thing about uber is that the drivers would want to talk even more than cabbies.

What gets me about this shit is how Uber supporters claim about transparency and how there is a record. How feedback culls out bad actors. All these incentives. Makes perfect sense !

They don't realize the biggest incentive. Uber making money. This pretty much cancels out any reason for Uber to be upfront or transparent. It just causes issues.

The problem with this discussion is that we are all men.

No Uber driver wants to rape any of us. Even the gay ones will find us all too old and ugly.

Just about every female I know who has taken Uber/Lyft has at least one story of a creepy/sketchy driver who either said inappropriate things or just had the sexual predator vibe about him.

Prior to Uber/Lyft coming into existence, none of these same women ever told me a similar story about this occurring with taxi drivers. I'm not saying it never happens, but I'm saying that the barrier to entry probably does make the average taxi driver less likely to be a creep.

The problem with Uber/Lyft is that any sketchy, drug-addicted pervert can fire it up and quickly become a driver.

I think you have a lot more really bad people driving Uber/Lyft, whereas with taxis you probably get a lot of assholes and route-gamers, but few who are outright dangerous.

I'd even be willing to believe that, on average, the typical Uber driver is no worse than the typical tax driver, but that Uber has a lot more on the "bottom end" who you really, really want to avoid if you're female.

As a male, I wouldn't be afraid to take Uber. However, I would not advise any females to use it when alone.

A couple years ago there was a local small rideshare company that marketed as women drivers for women passengers. Haven't seen anything about them recently though, so I guess they didn't make it.

You feeling okay, buddy? Don't be so down on yourself. I'm sure there's somebody out there that would love to rape you

The trouble keeps piling up for Uber/Lyft, a new California ruling may make them convert drivers to actual employees (which they wont ever do)...

These things always get overturned in appeals. There's too much at stake. it's not just uber/lyft. It's also the whole food delivery sector that needs these independent contractors to keep costs down. Way too much VC money in Silicon Valley relies on the "gig economy"

And that's really the issue here.

There are plenty of flaws in the business model of Uber/Lyft, some of which put passengers in danger, but there isn't enough force to get this stuff reformed because of powerful interests on their behalf.

Druff I'm not trying to troll/hate here, but I wonder if you've ever used Uber/Lyft.

I have loaded it up but it's never been competitive in the few times I tried (cabs would have been cheaper).

    But why does this matter?

I'm saying I would use it myself and feel safe.

But I'm also not a woman.

How do you compare prices? Have you only done this outside of casinos where cabs are waiting in a queue ?
