lol, full transparency i will not be doing any shit gambling.
anyway, customs is out of control so i take the bus across while parking at greektown casino for free, as it's way easier and faster. (druff approved)
Not sure if you know this, but I traveled there in May 2014.
The border crossing sucked. Some days it went quickly, but other days it took a long time. It didn't help that I ran really bad with the lines I chose, including one where the guy took a 20-minute break! I crossed via both the bridge and the tunnel.
The rooms at Caesars Windsor were pretty nice.
The casino was also pretty nice looking and fairly large, but was weirdly laid out. The video poker paytables were awwwwwwwwwwful, though.
The city of Windsor itself is boring, but you have a very nice view of the Detroit skyline from the riverwalk, which is directly across the street from the hotel.
If you don't have kids with you, you can ask for the tower with the view of the skyline, which I recommend.
I also recommend taking a walk by the river at night, because the skyline looks especially nice then.
Caesars Windsor is NOT a good place for kids. Most of the property (including all but 1 restaurant) is restricted to those 19 and over. I didn't know this until I got there, and I had Benjamin with me. I was annoyed that this rendered my $500 food comp basically useless, but I was able to talk room service into making an exception and bringing food from the steakhouse up to my room.
I also did "disaster tourism" of Detroit during the day, visiting the various abandoned neighborhoods and businesses. It was safer than you might imagine, though I didn't get out and go into any of these places. I did stop a few times to take pictures.
The only area I'd suggest staying away from is the Packard Plant, as that area is apparently still bad. Two weeks after I visited, a tourist like me was murdered there while taking pictures from right outside his car (something I also did at the Packard Plant). However, the tourist was also a moron in that he tried to fight the mugger and got shot. I would have just let the dude have my camera.
But I have to say, it was very interesting to see all of this, especially the abandoned businesses, railroad station, post office, etc.
I can give you a link to the website describing the route I followed if you want. Not sure if you're from the Detroit area or not. If you're already from there, you obviously know about all this stuff and it's not much of a thrill.
Not sure if you have any interest in Niagara Falls, but that's about 230 miles away, as is Toronto. I visited both when I was in the area.
Here is my trip report: http://pokerfraudalert.com/forum/sho...May-21-23-2014
I've been to Detroit before (slightly off topic but Druff mentioned disaster tourism) it was in 2010. I went for DEMF. my friend is from there and we went riding around. we passed one neighborhood full of abanonded grey stones. they were in bad shape. now they're selling for millions.
he tried to show me the old Tigers stadium. we rode to it only to find it had been torn down and only the front gates were there. my friend almost cried.
still a nice city though. Windsor is cool too but like Druff said, not much for kids. look foward to the rest of the trip report.
side note:
the second tallest building in downtown Detroit at the time I was there was not only abanonded but even had scorch marks at the top of the building. it was like something out of Robocop
"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next."
George Steinbrenner
checking in.
river view of Detroit.
more to come.
I don't mind Caesars Windsor myself, but not really for families. **Unless you can convince your wife/baby mama to take them to the water park while you gamble ***Not recommended.
As Druff said if you're in this area head to Niagara Falls if you want a better touristy spot.
But if you're there for Beer + Poker + bars/etc....Windsor is a great choice.
little boat
big barge
Just last night someone crashed a boat in to a seawall there at the detroit river, 1 dude died and a few others survived getting scooped up from the current 15 mins later.
Also I haven't been to that casino since it was renamed, we used to go to canada on fri/sats and drink at the bars when we were 19 and then after last call go gamble and sober up before coming back across the border.
according to vpfree its $80 CAD coin in per point
rofl
More boat pictures less video poker chat.
hit the pool, hot tub, sauna. kinda lame night, didn't much feel like drinking.
