... but I'm not doing this.

This forum pretty much runs itself. I made that clear when I started it in early 2012.

I'm not here to ban unpopular users or make sure that the content of the Flying Stupidity forum is top notch.

I keep the thing running, do radio approximately once per week, and write a good deal of content to keep this place more interesting.

That's all I can do, that's all I want to do, and that's all I have time for.

I agree that Mumbles is still dominating the forum, and I might have to restrict him down to 10 posts per day or something.
    Druff,

Since you asked me to cut back on posting, and keeping my comments relevant, I have taken great strides to do so. Here's how:

    1) While I am an active poster, I'm already posting less than 10/day since you asked me to cut back on doing so. Here's proof: As of your comment today, I had 2440 posts.

    Name: image.jpeg
Views: 571
Size: 36.4 KB

    10 days ago, I had 2347 posts.

    Name: image.jpeg
Views: 639
Size: 47.2 KB

That means I've averaged about 9.3 posts/day since then. But that number is probably much higher than I expect to post going forward since I had plenty of time at the tables in Vegas during the last 7 days to read and post while getting dealt an avalanche of shitty cards.

    2) I have disciplined myself to mostly post on threads of particular interest, namely politics, poker, financial market stuff, and random/dumb stuff. Some of those topics, though, are especially interesting to me (Brexit and other politics), and I am following those topics like the unreformed political junkie that am I.

    3) My posts have mostly been contributing stories that I ran across on the topic that contributed to the discussion in the thread. AND because I want to give other users opportunities to post relevant news stories, I have intentionally did NOT posted about several relevant stories, waiting for other users to find them on their own and post about them.

    4) Some users on here are so bent on pissing on me that when I post something that shows them they (or a user they like) made a mistake (prolly b/c its outside their area of expertise), they come storming in to shit on me instead of objectively reading the content of my posts. And in one case, one of them should even know that what I said was correct if (a) he wasn't so bent on hating me, or (b) is as much of an expert in his own career field as he believes he is!

    5) And if you are going to post-restrict me to some particular number/day, you should consider doing so for all users. In fact, during the span from when I posted about my relative posting to sonatine's (mid-morning of 6/20) to just now, the OP posted an average of 14.4 times/day (144 over 10 days).

So, really, let's be frank about what is being said by some of the active members who continue to shit on me: Even 1 post/day in a thread they like to chatter in would be more than they want to tolerate, even if I were to gush ball-licking praise on how brilliant/funny/insightful they are.

Seriously. Look at the facts, sir. You are better than to be swayed by partisan rancor.

As an aside: the original Leisure suit Larry game required age verification because of sexual content. Being my first foray in computer gaming it holds a special spot in my memory. The questions that were asked(five was it?) to prove your age were influenced by what age you indicated you were upon log-in.....that is, as long as you weren't under 18 and as long as you didn't say you were above 90 (i think it said you should be dead!).

I used to "hack" into this game and go try to get laid when my dad was at work. Not sure, but getting laid might have been the whole point of that game.

    Good times.

yes the entire point of the L sL game is to get laid. I rarely played the original but played the updated 16 bit version that allowed for mouse movement. those questions were always funny.

another thing to note was this game didn't have any sort of copy protection. so it could be pirated easy (something they fixed in later games). For example, Indiana Jones and the last crusade required the booklet that came with the game to beat it.

bonus trivia: LsL is also based on an early game called Soft Porn Adventure which had the same premise but was 100% text based. that's the game (along with Kings Quest) that started the entire RPG genre.
How dare you just leave out the greatest text trilogy of all time. ZORK!!! Still funniest line ever in a game and it fits even today on this forum at times. "talking to yourself is a sign of impending mental collapse". Sidenote they have released a trilogy of KingsQuest for play on PS4.

what did I leave out? Sierra Online had a bunch of text driven RPGs back in the mid 80s. Al Lowe worked on Soft Core.

I miss the days of DOS. granted I wasn't really old enough but I definitely remember using it to play games on my parents computer before we got Windows 3.1

I remember having to install Doom 2 from the DOS command line prompt.

    edit:

oh shit. today I've learned Soft Core Porn Adventure wasn't he first! That's ftp. I like to learn about these things.

Didn't realize Wrenchjockey was a Boris refugee. This breakaway group of highly intelligent posters have obv become bored with the repeated joke and have crawled back to raise shit, targeting newbies or others.
And hey, they've had some success by pushing buttons and throwing their collective weight around(considerable).

Wake up Druff. I'm not saying shut them out but realize the agenda

Not sure 104 posts qualifies me for refugee status, but if so, point me the way to the tent city. Truth be told, I usually don't post much anywhere. When I feel like it kind of thing. I've belonged to this 'group' of websites beginning with NWP in 2005, and have followed it through all of its subforums, spinoffs, and whatnot. Soooo, yeah. Kind of a vested interest in it all...and sad to watch it slowly decay to shit. If you really think 4D hanging it up here has anything to do with boris or skatz or whatever, you really don't pay attention.

I was part of NWP since the beginning in May 2004, so I also feel "invested" in the community. That's the main reason I keep this thing alive. It's definitely not for money (I take a loss), and it's definitely not for the gratitude and appreciation I get (instead I get trolled, criticized, and harassed).

It would be WAY easier to just shut down this portion of PFA, leave up the "serious biz" forums to discuss gambling, Vegas, and poker scandals, and be done with it.

However, that would also kill the NWP community and spirit, and I don't want to do that.

You also have to realize that times change, people change, and forums change. Many people leave these forums simply because their life situation changes, or they simply lose interest. They are replaced by others who register new. Rinse and repeat.

Some of the new users will be good, some will be okay, and some will be terrible.

Sometimes the makeup of today's forum will be inferior to that of a few years ago. That happens, too.

There is very little I can do to control this.

Without new users, the forum will die. I don't want this to become another skatz where the same 5 guys who like each other post inside jokes back and forth all day. I don't want this to become another boris where posting simply dies off.

There has to be a steady influx of new users to keep things fresh. I'm not banning them just because they try too hard or fail to fit in with the cool kids.

I will place restrictions on those who overpost or dominate the forum. As I said, I'm close to doing that for certain people. You can always block the 1 or 2 people who are annoying you.

The solution to make this forum better is to post good content yourself. If you're just sitting around waiting to be entertained, or if you don't want to post yourself until you think the forum is "good", then you're also part of the problem.

This reminds me a bit of my last days on Donkdown. Micon was once a loyal friend who defended me even when detractors criticized me to him privately. However, by 2011, a few of his Vegas buddies (including Schoenfeld) were repeatedly in his ear about how I was ruining DD. The conversation would go like this:

Micon: "Hey, I don't ever see you posting on my forum. Why is that?"

Vegas friend: "It's Druff. I can't stand him. He has too much of a presence there. As long as he's involved, I don't want to be part of it."

So after Micon heard this from a few people, he started to believe it. This led to his eventual lashing out at me. He honestly believed that I was the factor holding back DD from greatness.

He got his wish. Within about a month of our blowup, I was gone.

Did any of these Vegas buddies ever show up and post? Nope. Schoenfeld showed up briefly to do radio, but no one liked his attitude on air, and he was pretty much booed off the stage within two weeks. The rest of them never even logged in.

The truth was that these guys were just making excuses. They just had no interest in Micon's site.

After I left, DD fell apart, and within 6 months it was a ghost town.

My point is that it's easy to bitch about this poster and that poster ruining things for you, but it doesn't mean that removing those posters will make the site great again.

Since 2014, I have taken a policy of inclusion here. I let all of the skatz guys sign up accounts. I let Marty post here, even when 75% of his presence tends to be about trolling me. I am trying to leave this place open to just about anyone.

I'm not going to ban people just because they're disliked.

I do my part to contribute interesting content here. I keep everything running smoothly, as the site's sole mod/admin/tech guy.

I am not going to appoint mods. I have my opinions of how I want this site moderated, and I'm not handing it off to someone else so they can do things differently, or perhaps abuse their position. I'm also not interested in getting into pissing matches with mods who do things I disagree with. It's a headache I don't want or need.

This will remain a lightly moderated forum. I will restrict anyone who overposts or dominates it. I will remove anyone who is here simply to disrupt things or constantly troll me.

I do this as a hobby for enjoyment. If it ceases to be enjoyable, I will either shut down the part which I don't enjoy, or remove the people who are making it unenjoyable. This isn't a job, nobody here is my customer, and I'm going to run it how I see fit.

If it runs into the ground, so be it. Then I'll just pull the plug and not look back.

It's up to you guys where you want to see this community go. Just remember that the more people give me grief, the less I want to keep doing this.

    Good point.

I think I'll remove one of the biggest sources of negativity, hypocrisy, and worthlessness around here.

And we're talking about an IP ban here, folks. Not just a ban.

    Why an IP ban?

Because I felt like giving one, and this sad pockled motherfucker had it longtime coming.

I take back what I said earlier. I do get enjoyment out of running this forum.

serious question: does an IP ban mean he can't even use a different computer and make a dupe? does the IP originate at the ISP?

guess the peace message I sent won't be returned.

An IP ban means the IP addresss he's using cannot access the forum anymore.

He can go on his phone (if he takes it off Wifi) and read the forum, or he can use one of those slow-ass proxy things.

I wrote a program a few years ago to automatically detect proxies and ban them, but I won't bother to re-enable it. I turned it off about 2 years ago.

It's just a pain in the ass when you're on your computer and want to read a certain forum you're accustomed to reading, and you have to engage in extra steps to be able to do so.

See, this is where Projecting Pockles has it wrong. (That nickname is in honor of his boy Donald Trump.)

He thinks that this forum is of utmost importance to me, and I can't live without it. I can understand why he thinks that, because that's exactly his situation. Marty lives for forums, and he literally has nothing going on in his life outside of it. He's a sad, car-living vagrant who resorts to dogs for companionship because no human being can stand being around him.

I have a longtime girlfriend I'm happy with, a wonderful son, plenty of money, and enough friends outside of this thing to where I don't need any of it.

I honestly don't give a shit anymore. If this forum remains fun for me, that's great, and I'll run it indefinitely. If it becomes a stressful downer, I'll tear it down -- or at least this portion of it -- and won't miss it in the slightest.

There was a time when this mattered to me a lot more, but that time has passed. I'm honestly tired of dealing with the bullshit.

I should have banned Marty permanently a long time ago. He's toxic and will never get past his irrational hatred of me.

Every single NWP spinoff except for this one has failed. Every single one, including Donkdown. It's a lot harder to run something like this than you think. There are so many times when you're left with a situation where you're gong to piss someone off no matter what decision you make. There will be other times when you're simply doing what's best and fair for the forum, and you wind up with a psycho harrassing you for life, such as what happened with Chucky.

It's a pain in the fucking ass.

This is pretty much a volunteer position to keep this community going, and I'm getting tired of volunteering.

If this becomes too much of a source of stress, I'm just going to do away with it.

You guys know me by now, and are probably aware that I don't just make statements like the above for dramatic purposes.

It's up to everyone here where you want this to go.
