Setting aside for a second the fact that there is zero chance the men and women who actually make up the US military would ever take part in an attempt to take over the US and create some turners diary paranoid dystopia....but if they did, the US civilians wouldn't stand a chance no matter how well armed they were. He does have completely logical point that there's really no reason to have any laws at all since criminals don't follow laws. He found the only loophole of laws, namely that they only work of the mere hope that everyone follows them. There's really no other mechanisms that makes them effective.
Who needs an assault rifle for hunting and personal protection? Leave them to the military and law enforcement. These weapons should stay at the workplace even for cops. They don't go home at night to be stolen or used by a deranged cop or family member. Having said that, any citizen should be able to own any other guns that they want and carry them concealed if they so wish unless they are:
1) Felons
2) Under a restraining order
3) Not citizens
4) Convicted of a a DUI (you've already demonstrated irresponsible alcohol usage)
5) On the no-fly list
6) Mashuganahs with some kind of psychological paper trail (police reports, forced committments etc.)
7) Serial Poker Fraud Alert posters/trolls
