A photo trip report of my day building a new custom PC.

The last one I built lasted 8 years and was mostly going strong until last week. In truth only the graphics card stopped working, but it seemed a good excuse to go shopping.

My aim this time is to produce a totally silent yet pretty top spec machine. Here's the shopping.

First job - put in the optical discs and power supply.

I took the discs out of the old machine. One BD-R and one DVD-R. Needed a bit of time to get the discs mounted in exactly the right place so that the eject button worked smoothly. No issues with the PS.

Shouldn't do. Specialist fanless components and heat sink rated to 95W.

Bare mobo with memory (2 x 16GB) installed.

Yes this is all quite mundane but I do want to hollar at a fanless cpu sink.

Pop the CPU in. Slap on a bit of thermal grease and put the fan mounting brackets in.

Intel Core i7 6700 65W.

We have a place here in Chicago burbs called FRY'S electronics, and they have a daily email with all kinds of daily specials, and free shipping if you meet a $ minimum (usually around $35). They are pretty good for deep discounts on parts for building your own pc.

Mount the colossol fanless heatsink. This motherfucker fills half the case.

Also installed the HDD. Blink and you'll miss it - it's just above the middle PCI-E slot. These M.2 disks mount directly onto the motherboard.

Samsung SM951 512GB M.2 PCIe.

vbulletin seems to only do pictures in landscape

Time to drop the mobo into the case. First snag - the second optical disc fouls the ATX screw, so after fiddling about getting it working earlier, I take the DVD-R out and just leave the BD-R in. Once out, the mobo fits snugly. Screw all the screws into the standoffs, hook up the front panel cables and case speaker. Plug in the power supply cables and connect up to the mobo.

Moment of truth - plug in - cross fingers - pray it doesn't blow up - switch on.

Result!

Its like you took a rich guy (I7) and put his beautiful house in the middle of a trailer park.

Drop in the Hauppauge Colossus TV card cannibalised from the previous rig. Plug in the BD-R power and hook up the SATA.

Plug in the remaining various case cables into the mobo.

Tidy up the cables (a bit).
