Serious question for you since Trump and the U.S. are such a joke in the Old World. What happens on your continent if every single American soldier and piece of military hardware were removed from Europe tomorrow? You love to joke about Trump, who I admit invites it upon himself, and talk about how the United State fucks things up world wide, but what happens if our military isn't there to police the world? For all the fucked up shit we've done overseas, the U.S. has had an overall positive effect when it comes to keeping a status quo (not really peace) on the global stage.

Britain and France are both nuclear powers. So Western Europe would be fine.

Though I must admit those former Soviet Eastern Block countries would be up for grabs again (which is Putin's ultimate end game in all of this)

Putin gets the band back together and eventually closes the gap in power between the US and the new Soviet Union. Definitely not what you want.

In you mind, do you think that Russia or China would nuke Europe rather than invade or do you think the Brits and the French go scorched Earth and try to fuck everything up when they realize they will lose after being invaded? My thought is that Russia could conceivably roll through the whole of Europe with medium casualties at worst if the nukes don't come into play. In all honesty, I think that the U.S. and Russia would fight to a stalemate if both were able to get their full forces on a broad enough battlefield, but I don't think we could hold off China if they managed to get even half their forces across the Pacific to North American soil. The numbers game catches up at some point.

Brexit was 99% internal in the sense that the other EU leaders didn't really come into the discussion when the leave/remain debate was being held by our politicians/public. EU just had to hold its breath and hope. I was Trump style shocked as the results came in. Certainly wasn't how I voted.

btw I whole heartily agree that other NATO countries should be paying their way. But Trump suggesting they should be spending way more than 2% GDP on defence is ridiculous. And suggesting the US gets some kind of backdated refund from NATO is beyond farcical.

I have a lot of freinds over on Canary Wharf that were also shocked about the Brexit. Even if the vote came down 54/46 to stay 46% is enough of the vote that should signal people have some real Concerns. Same thing if Hillary won here. You hate to view either of these "victories" as a mandate but I honestly think people want the left to tap the breaks on a globalist/socialist agenda. I think conservatives realize the fastest way to losing power in the US or to lose momentum in the U.K. Is to go full "elections have consequences" mode. I think you are seeing that in the USA now. There really isn't much standing in the way of tax "reform", Obamacare rewrite etc but they don't want to touch the third rail so quickly. Liberals went full retard in 2008. Before they could even close the deal on the ACA they lost Ted Kennedys seat in Massachusetts..... Massachusetts! Still they pressed on got this PoS ACA and have lost the entire political war since 2009 with the one exception being the reelection of our first black president (lots of votes from typical non voters, sadly enough).

I think the point on 2% of GDP is because if the USA pulled out tomorrow they would likely have to spend 12% in order to not be vulnerable. We are 20T in debt and one of the many things we have to show for it is the worlds best Military by a factor of 10X. The whole of Europe/NATO benefits from that even if they don't want to admit it. Same with Japan and S Korea for that matter. I think the retro payments were put in the table as the first thing to go in a negotiation. That said I do think we are going to have a new/different/better deal with NATO and Europe going forward.

People that voted for brexit weren't looking to weaken the socialist agenda, if anything they were looking to strengthen that. That's where the "if we leave we can give 350 million to NHS (National Health Service) every week"-part comes from.

The 2% was agreed upon in 2014 as a goal for 2024. It's not 2024.

Update: My instincts about Merkel were correct. Once these US companies get in compliance of German law the switch to the US and probably the rest of the world will be easy. They may decide to implement German law on everyone voluntarily. Merkel's being presented as the face of infinite wisdom but many people say she destroyed Germany, altho probably not for long. I don't know if she did or didn't but here's a quote fr The Washington Times.
