Because there is no longer a draft. Add to that the ability to avoid needing to join the military to get money for college (because of the ability to borrow oodles of money to do so), and most college stufents face zero risk of a war directly affecting their lives.Nobody listened 14 years ago.

Correct on both accounts: There is currently no draft AND young adults have to sign up for "Selective Service". But the later is just filling out a form. Quickly forgotten after the fact. And if the military needs extra troops in a pinch, it just boosts enlistment bonuses, calls up the National Guard units from the states, or recalls previously discharged troops (the backdoor draft). Just like it did during the height of the Ira War. Which meant that the vast majority of college students never had any snippet of a worry they would be drafted.there is no draft currently but at any time it can be reinstated. The guy joined the marines at 17 or 18 and worked his way up the ranks and became a General. He has no wife or kids, his entire life has been dedicated to the armed forces.
