From what I can tell, Trump has been looking for someone to deal with all the captured ISIS fighters (many of them European), and Turkey stepped up and said they would take care of things. And Trump maybe underestimated: a) How Turkey would use this as a pretense to accomplish other military aims, and b) How upset this would make everyone else in a bipartisan way.

to be clear, i think getting troops out of syria is fab. i really, really do. but what you me and everyone but a certain sundowning learning disabled reality tv star understand is that what is most important is to never withdraw from a country you invaded without there being some sort of an accord.
turkey announced just now that its invasion is going to start in the morning. that invasion is happening because trump wanted to get off the phone with erdogan so he agreed to just gather up his troops and leave.
