The only thing I’m sure about is he’s going to run on the left being weak on immigration. It will be issue #1.
He’s going to let this go on for long enough that it’s clear the democrats are the problem because they aren’t taking homeland security seriously.
This is all it’s about. Nothing more nothing less. And any lefty that’s ever said we need to be tough on imigration or homeland security is going to have that quote/video/sound clip played against them for the next two years.
And of course anyone who is paying attention knows this whole issue is a straw man.

I used to think immigration and the wall were winning issues for him. Now i'm not so sure. Fear is obv the most powerful human emotion but i'm not sure we (as americans) have it in us to be perpetually afraid of brown people, election after election cycle. We'll see.
Also polling suggests that independents are actually against the wall, which surprised me a little. Looks like there will be zero impetus for the democrats to cave on wall funding. What will independents think of trump if the government is shutdown for years? What will his base thinks if he caves to a budget with no wall funding? (Note how trump is in a no-win situation and how idiotic it was for him to ever promise this to begin with.)
Imo, the number one issue for 2020 will be the economy. But i don't think the debate over the economy will be as good for trump as he probably believes even if the stock market does well.
People vote for hope and change. It worked for obama. It worked for trump. After 4 years, voters will be able to see what's changed for them. If you're on Wall Street, you've probably done well. If you're the average trump voter (or average american in general), your life has probably not changed much.
The dems can then play the classic "us against them" argument -- i.e., "look at how well the trump tax cuts helped the wealthy. Now tell me if your life has improved. What do your medical expenses look like? How about your student loans?" Etc., etc. i'm not saying the dems are advancing great solutions for these issues. I'm just saying the dems will have powerful talking points.

The issue is going to be something that neither side has the tools to fix but that the right wing wont even have the stomach to admit; if middle class America is working two jobs just so they can live paycheck to paycheck, phrases like 'unemployment is at an all time low' and 'the Dow is thriving' are going to interpreted as nothing short of salt in their wounds.
And the way things are going, there are going to be a _lot_ of wounds in 2019 and the knife that put them there is definitively Republican.
