We still haven't heard put blacks back into slavery. O/U on that is page 1700.

Fuck page 1700. If Trump is down heavy in the polls come 2020, I can see him hinting at such a pledge himself tbh.

And speaking of Trump, Blacks and Presidents.

what's so fucking hard about that?

As you prepapre to head to the polls on November 8, here are 8 voter suppression tactics to look out for on election day.

    1. Discouragement In The Face Of Long Lines
No matter when or where you are voting, the possiblity of encountering an excessively long line is always a given. Pay close attention to anyone suggesting you “leave and come back later” when the lines are shorter, or even attempting to discourage you from voting altogether. Be sure to plan your trip to the polls at a time when you have some time to spare, as not to be distracted by the potentially long lines.
    2. Strict Identification Requirements
If you are a registered voter, in most cases, a government-issued ID should be all you need to vote. In some instances, you may be required to present your voter registration card, but if you notice that other voters are being given different instructions than you or anyone in your group, don’t hesitate to ask questions for clarification.
    3. Unofficial Poll “Observers”
While polling places have historically been relatively hassle-free enviroments in many states, the volatile nature of this election year may result in the presence of people attempting to question you, or do other things to purposely irritate you until you either leave or are asked to leave. Remember to stand firm and don’t give in to anyone attempting to deter you from doing what you came to do, which is to vote.
    4. Last Minute Polling Site Changes
In these last days leading up to the election, make it a point to consistently check to see where your polling location is each day. Changes in the location of the place you’re supposed to vote are a high possibility in some states and you may not be notified ahead of time if that happens.
    5. Inconsistent Information About Polling Hours Of Operation
Polling sites will open as early as 6am and close as late as 9pm on election day. Hours of operation vary by state, so make sure you check to see what time the hours are for your state ahead of time. On the day you plan to go vote, check again before you head over just to make sure there aren’t any changes that cause you to miss your opportunity to vote.
    6. Overhaul Of Villifying Campaign Ads
Read up on the candidates and where they stand on the issues most important to you so that you aren’t easily swayed by the influx of negative campaign ads, which will undoubtedly surface as a last attempt to gain your vote by painting the other candidate in a bad light. Know the history of your candidate, but also keep in mind that the action plans they’ve laid out for the present and future are what will prove most vital should they be elected president.
    7. Random Voter Purging
If you are removed from a voting line to be questioned, repositioned or even prevented from voting by a polling official, keep a cool head and ask questions to find out what’s going on rather than walking away without casting your vote. It also helps to do a quick read up on your rights as a voter ahead of time, or bring someone with you who is at least minimally informed about the basics.
    8. Blatant Intimidation
Whether it be subtle comments from other voters, angry words from protestors, or an irritated polling official who’s having a bad day, don’t let anyone intimidate you to the point that you stop yourself from voting without doing everything possible to make sure your vote is counted.
The fact that these tactics are being put to use alone should tell you just how valuable and powerful your vote is. Otherwise, why else would they be trying to suppress it, right?

Probably because he has done an about-face on many things. When he first announced that he was considering running for president in 2000 it was as a Democrat and he was pro-choice, a friend of the Clintons and proposed a wealth tax (if your net worth is above a certain level, a tax on your net worth every year regardless of income), which even most socialists don't believe in.

democrats are against voter ID laws because they think people without photo IDs tend to be democrats. if those people tended to vote republican, democrats would support strict voter ID laws.

republicans take the position they do for self-serving reasons also.

lol at thinking either side has noble intentions.

I totally agree with a wealth tax even all the way down to how we fund education. Would be much more equitable than the income tax and encourage productivity.

Trump isn't exactly the Great Communicator, but clearly he meant here that you often need ID if you use a credit card when purchasing groceries, and was trying to say that it's ridiculous that you need to show ID to make a small credit card purchase, but not to vote.

While Trump definitely didn't put this one eloquently, it's clear to anyone with a functioning brain what he meant. Only a complete moron would believe that Trump was saying that you need to use an ID to buy everyday groceries with cash.

His point actually isn't bad. In support of voter ID laws, he pointed out that it's legal for grocery stores to make you show ID to make a small credit card purchase, and that he finds it ridiculous that something far more important and essential to the country (voting) requires no ID.

Trump says and does so many stupid things. Why does the media take him out of context and harp on him over trivialities?
FFS! A credit card can be used at millions of business locations! Heck! They can even used with a device attached to a smart phone! But a citizen can only use their vote in the precinct they are registered to vote. And when someone votes, their name is checked against the voter roll.

Right wingers who hate that minorities overwhelmingly tend to vote Democratic are just putting up costly roadblocks for legitimate citizens to vote, people who were born here and lived without a picture ID card for decades. And the rightwing talking heads who say that it doesn’t cost anything or much to get the paperwork required for someome to get a state-insued ID card are lying through their teeth. They *know* that poor folks face costlu hurdles to getting such paperwork, be it actual money or a lot of time lost from work.
Mumbles, here's what I could do today, and it would be super easy to accomplish:

    1) Register my dog to vote, and falsify his birthdate to make him over 18 for the next election. Put down the address as any random address in a different precinct, and his mailing address as mine (or, alternately, just put down any phony mailing address which will throw away the mail he gets, such as a large business).

    2) Show up on election day to my own precinct, and vote.

    3) Show up to the other precinct (likely just a mile or two away), say I'm my dog, and vote again.

Simple, easy, and foolproof. There's zero point zero chance I would get caught. This doesn't take a criminal mastermind to figure out, either.

That's how terrible and non-secure our current system is. Any idiot can register a phony name to vote in any precinct, and then go vote under that phony name. There are zero attempts at verification.

I'm trying to understand how you and certain others on the left think that the current situation is acceptable.

And I'll be honest here: BOTH parties don't give a shit about voter rights, but rather are taking the side of whatever benefits them.

The people without ID are more likely to be Democrats.

Therefore, Democrats want to bend over backward to get them to the polls (even if it induces a ridiculously huge voter security flaw), and Republicans want to keep them from the polls.

Neither party is supporting/opposing voter ID laws from the standpoint of anyone's "rights".

Were the situation reversed (people without ID typically voting Republican instead of Democrat), then I bet we'd see a reversal in the way the parties claim to see this issue.

(Edit: I see blake already made this point, but I didn't even see his post until after I made this one!)

I'm approaching this one from a standpoint of common sense, not from that of a Republican. I want everyone who wants to vote to be able to vote. At the same time, we should not induce outrageous security flaws just to accommodate those who don't feel like putting out the effort to get their ID situation rectified.

I do support making it easier for people to get ID -- perhaps a national ID system based upon fingerprints? We definitely have the technology to do that now. This would still leave the potential vulnerability where illegal immigrants could obtain one of these national IDs, but this could be corrected by requiring those without an existing ID or birth certificate to provide information regarding their date of birth, social security number (if they have one), place of birth, etc, and then check it against existing records.

That would be the solution to this voting ID issue. Require ID, but make obtaining such an ID free and easy.

The only reasonable excuse that people have regarding not having ID is, "I lost my birth certificate, I live in another state from where I was born, and it's difficult to get a new, certified copy at this point."

So we need to find a way to deal with that situation for poor people who just want to vote, but we shouldn't just leave the voting registration process open to zero security, in attempt to help these people. That's like smashing a huge hole in your home's wall because the house's ventilation isn't very good.

I've only voted twice, neither time did I see anything like the above...

still, imho, instead of an individual mandate for health care the USA should have one for voting, as Australia does ($100 fine if you don't vote)--the country would be run a lot different...

Australia has 99% voter turn out...in the US, lucky to get 62% in a presidential election

the discouragement for voting in the USA is the absence of a penalty or reward---

ergo: when you vote you should get a lolli-pop just like the one you got as a kid right after the doctor stuck you with shot.

(get there early so you get a blue one---they are the best)

Mandatory voting is a horrible idea.

Everyone should have the right to abstain from voting at any time for any reason.

If we have issues with individual polling places, those should be corrected. Pass laws requiring sufficient time and notice before changing a polling place. Ensure proper staffing and polling places to avoid lines. Improve registration systems to where names are never lost or inexplicably deleted. I support all of this.

I do believe that "voting issues" people faced in recent times were more the result of incompetence than any kind of grand conspiracy to deny people their votes.

It's been two years since the election and Trump has turned out to be the worst president perhaps ever. If Hilary or anyone
had failed so badly, lied to the public every day, people would be calling for her head.
So it's who's in office and how are they doing. Every single credit worthy pundit, reporter, critic, is saying Trump is in big trouble from start to finish. The details will come out. Just a matter of time. He has corruption boldly printed in his tweets.
Cohen has, wisely, recorded everything, and will likely be the kindling for the fire.
Forget about left and right. This is about Donald. A liar, a cheat, a phoney.
I feel sad for anyone holding trust in him.

That's a guess. Gerrymandering and voter suppression is not taken lightly in the U.S. Never mind the electoral college bullshit.
The difference, they say, next time will be demographics especially women.
