garrett, what everyone's trying to say is that if other countries even think it's *remotely* conceivable that the US can ever decide to default on anyone, the debt becomes unsellable. the US would no longer be able to borrow money, and thus no longer able to pay any of its bills, which would only be one small part of the problem.

And "the large part of the problem" would be the instant nullification of the United States Dollar as the worlds reserve currency.
