Been following the story about the budget vs dreamers. Never quite got the handle on the dreamer/DACA mechanics.
We used to subcontract cleaning to illegals but the owner sucked and the turnover was too high.
So we wacked the sub and I advocated doing it in house but we gotta do the paperwork right. My wife does that end.
Turns out most of the hires are DACA. Whatever.
One kid was a hustler. Wanted to do maintenance. Fix things. We bump him a few bucks.
He’s 27. Married with kid too young. Typical shit. Talks a lot and I’ve gotten to know him. His parents got divorced in Brazil and his family came over to see Disneyland when he was about 4 and they never left.
Goes to high school and all that. Now he has to make some money for the family and isn’t legal. He does auto detailing for car dealerships as a contractor. This is pre Obama so he has to keep it down low.
Obama comes through and he needs affordable health insurance. He gets his paperwork and renews DACA every two years. They review his record and he’s clear.
He sells his auto detailing business to an employee who isn’t legal.. He gets a legit job with us. Our conversations start about cars. I’m a little manic about my cars and we shoot the shit. He gives me pointers.
So the kid is nervous about the news. Wants to go to continue college and get into programming but isn’t sure he’ll get it done in 2 years. If Trump ships him out he feels he will have wasted the money spent on school as he might not have his diploma by then.
So I tell him, “go!”. They can never take your education away from you. Do what you love.
You enjoy the classes? Be happy.
Two days ago the kid signs up and the first class is that night. He deposits $5000 in his checking account.
Yesterday he tells me the IRS seized the $5000. His balance is $0. No school and no savings. The illegal who bought his detailing business never paid taxes and somehow they feel my boy is on the hook.
Poor kid cannot win. He’s done nothing wrong but has had to live on the fringe just because he was born to a particular parent. He’s just like you or me in any other regard.
Of course, my spurring him on to go to school cost him $5000. Now I gotta figure out how big my heart really is beyond cheap advice.

Is Trump attacking the freedom of the press, or is he just complaining they aren't giving him a fair shake?
I mean lets look at Turkey where the new dictator has actually passed laws severely curtailing press freedom and thrown a lot of people critical of him in prison. I think this falls under the category of attacking the freedom of the press. I am not sure anything Trump has done really falls under that category. I think the worst he has done is try to bully and intimidate them for being too critical of him using mostly juvenile school yard bullying tactics.

No, but it always starts with demonizing, then escalates to persecuting. Such a threat must be met early and head-on.
He has said he wants to change the libel laws to make it easier to sue the press. This has always been a matter for the states but in theory there could be federal laws about it.

I think if we lived in Turkey or Russia someone like Trump could actually be a danger in this regard. But I really think our system of checks and balances and overall our political culture and values make it impossible for a President to go this far. I absolutely believe he would like to be able to do this if given the opportunity, but I don't see it happening. I think even the Republican Party would ultimately turn on him if he tried to reach too far.
That being said, between him and Congress between their campaign to enrich the rich at the expense of everyone else, his foreign policy "misadventures" and assault on the environment, some real damage could be done in the next 3 years to our country. But restricting freedom of speech of the press, or anyone else, I just don't see it.
