The commission recently provided a list of new terms included under the law. Among the 31 categories are genderqueer, Two Spirit, hijra, androgynous and third sex.
The December 2015 ordinance prevents gender-identity discrimination in employment and housing. Penalties can range from a maximum of $125,000 to $250,000 if the discrimination is willful and prolonged.

Please stop listening to people who are lying to you. NYC has the same transgender legal protections that all of the non-retarded world has, with no major issues.
A PDF released by the city had a page with nothing but 31 examples of alternative gender identifications. There was no heading and it was clearly not a regulation. It was just a list of examples.

It's sad how much you care about what other people call themselves while we have 8 million more pressing issues facing all of us.
i'm not telling you this is a huge issue, but i think you're understating the larger cultural points a little.
you're right that NYC didn't "officially" designate 31 different categories of genders, though it looks like a state agency listed on them on that flyer for whatever reason
the slightly larger issue, however, is that in NYC, it appears that you could be liable for discrimination for intentionally referring to someone with a pronoun that person does not prefer
i.e., if i employ you, you get to dictate to me what pronoun i must call you. personally, i would call someone what ever he/she preferred. but imposing that requirement on someone is another thing altogether.

that may be true but i suspect even most self-identified liberals on this board agree with me. if we're so sensitive to people's feelings and so politically correct that we legally require people to use the pronoun the other person prefers under the threat of law (and at the expense of science), we have a problem
what's so frustrating about American politics are the "issues" people fight over are complete smokescreens. shit like transgender bathroom rights, gay marriage, the war on christmas, whatever fake bullshit they're on are a complete waste of everyone's time. And if you happen to be a pro life, non-passing mtf trans in the bible belt that wants to own an AR15 and wants pot to be legal you're shit out of luck
you dont get it, do you? point is, gender pronouns are the biggest of deal for trans folk etc. i know a person who doesn't even try to pass, aside from name, and gets all triggered to shit if you don't use female pronouns. this is very common. a vanilla boy like yourself likely has little to no exposure to any of this shit.
