Can we all just take a second to thank Yung Curaçao for this thread? Without him, the world would be such a happier, more productive place. Happy Thanksgiving, Martin, wherever you are....sweet prince.
MumblesBadly: "Jesus probably didn't exist" is a myth. The contemporary Jewish historian Josephus mentions him by name being a messianic figure with a following and getting crucified.
at the risk of completely derailing this thread, i highly doubt you read what josephus actually said. most scholars acknowledge that the one paragraph he wrote relating to jesus the messiah was added by the church well after the fact.
if you look at that paragraph and compare it to his entire book (or even the rest of that page), this borders on inarguable. it's obviously written by an entirely different person.
Blaaaaaaaaake, why are you chasing vermitard all the way to his special ed class?
BlunderMaker: But intellectually superior enough to understand the limitations to one's own knowledge?
Blake: And you have advanced training in Ancient Greek and authorship to qualify this statement as meaning that the Josephus references to Jesus and related figures is merely fiction perpetrated by history-altering believers back in the day? Because the Wikipedia article on the matter, with numerous scholarly references, says otherwise.
Personally, I was once intrigued by the notion of the Jesus Myth, as I am an atheist. But after seeing how such claims tend to be based on projections of small issues, seemingly corroborated by mythology of predecessor religions (cue Zeitgeist The Movie), I decided that the Jesus Myth was a fanciful projection of militant atheists who are grasping at any reason, however tenuous, to denigrate religious belief. IMO, there's enough reason to do that separate from a wishful extrapolation of a speculative thesis. In other words, it's militant atheism's version of the Oxfordian theory, something I also at one time found convincing. The extant manuscripts of the writings of the first-century Romano-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus include references to Jesus and the origins of Christianity.[1][2] Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews, written around 93–94 AD, includes two references to the biblical Jesus Christ in Books 18 and 20 and a reference to John the Baptist in Book 18.[1][3] Scholarly opinion varies on the total or partial authenticity of the reference in Book 18, Chapter 3, 3 of the Antiquities, a passage that states that Jesus the Messiah was a wise teacher who was crucified by Pilate, usually called the Testimonium Flavianum.[4][5][1] The general scholarly view is that while the Testimonium Flavianum is most likely not authentic in its entirety, it is broadly agreed upon that it originally consisted of an authentic nucleus, which was then subject to Christian interpolation and/or alteration.[5][6][7][8][9][10] Although the exact nature and extent of the Christian redaction remains unclear,[11] broad consensus exists as to what the original text of the Testimonium by Josephus would have looked like.[9]

This Trump tweet from several hours ago flew under the radar as it was only a 'reply tweet'.

Once this tax bill fails considering the latest stances of the Trump administration backing someone who is perceived by the GOP establishment to be a pedophile, and the flagrant abundant racism, constant undermining, and outright insanity via Tweets, plus the obvious collusion that continues to come to light, I don't think it's a far fetched notion anymore that the GOP turns on him in the semi near future and moves to impeach.
That is if Mueller doesn't blow the whole thing wide open before then.
