It's really the latter. If GOP grows some balls and jestison Trump and his Merry Band of Fraudsters, the religious right will rally around the neocon ideology with a renewed religious fervor. That is evident by how the Senate nearly unanimously voted to increase sanctions against Russia. The problem for the GOP, as BCR points out, is that impeaching Trump and cleaning house of Russia-friendly cabinet picks will significantly damage the GOP brand with its mouth-breathing Trump-or-revolution base.

Trump won Michigan by a hair, so I assume he could, too. The landscape has changed. Obviously, depends on how hard he works and how politically adept he is. Trump had no political experience, but he'd been on TV and interviewed countless times. I would guess the learning curve would be too much for him to overcome.
And I know you don't believe this, but I think the chaos of the Trump admin is going to make people long for boring, old politicians and not entertainers.
