Kamala Harris is universally despised by just about everyone. If Trump picks say a Tim Scott or Marco Rubio, someone the establishment can get behind he will win going away. If he picks another MAGA candidate, he will likely lose. All he really needs to do is win the suburbs in MI and he has got it, because Georgia, Arizona and Nevada are done for Biden. The lead for Trump is simply too large to overcome at this point in those states. But he needs MI or PA and the only way to get one of those is to have the Republican establishment getting excited about the VP, knowing they could be president for 10+ years.

Why not just eliminate ID entirely, then?

We can just trust the population to always be who they say they are, and never to cheat, scam, or steal.

If an "acceptable" percentage of the population does it, no problem, right?

The "verified cases" of this type of voter fraud are way way way undercounted. I could register at 10 different precincts under fake names, around where I live, vote at each one of them, and the chance of getting caught would be just about zero point zero. Because how would they catch me? As long as you know the info you put down, they have no reason to suspect anything is wrong.

If you have no ID, you have much bigger problems with day-to-day life than being unable to vote. Republicans have, in the past, proposed ways for people to get ID easier, such as making it simpler to get a birth certificate copy. Democrats weren't interested. It's not really about giving the right to vote to people who can't get ID. It's getting votes for people who don't WANT ID, and almost all of them vote Dem.
