I had never heard of this picture or anything, but it seems like it was a pretty big deal back in the day. The photographer won a Pullitzer Prize for this photo. The story is a pretty good read:

I think its pretty fucked up that they nepalmed innocent civilians but had a press section set up outside to capture the aftermath!

Shocker there. It's only one of the most famous photographs in history. Who would expect a guy that can't even grasp third grade English to know anything about world history though, right?

Speaking of photographers, ethics, and expectations, great article in the Washington Post today.

Why I watched a snake-handling pastor die for his faith

" This is what I saw through my camera lens: Pastor Randy “Mack” Wolford, tossing and turning on the couch in his mother-in-law’s West Virginia trailer, suffering from the pain of a rattlesnake bite he had received earlier in the day. Parishioners surrounding him in prayer in the stifling heat. His mother stroking his feet, her expression a mixture of concern, sorrow and, eventually, acceptance: This is how her eldest son — a legend in the local Pentecostal serpent-handling community — would die.
Camera in hand, I watched as the man I’d photographed and gotten to know over the past year writhed, turned pale and slipped away, a victim of his unwavering faith, but also a testament to it. A family member called paramedics when Mack finally allowed it, but it was too late. Mack Wolford drew his final, labored breaths late Sunday night. He was 44. "

Indeed. This, along with the self-immolation Monk picture are the two quintessential pictures of the Vietnam war... love the fact that he misspelled napalm too

Another famous pic was this one from National Geographic back in June 1985 by Steve McCurry.

In 2002 McCurry and his team went back to Afghanistan to find this woman. They didn't know her name at the time, so all they brought was the photo that he took back in 1984. With a little luck then found her.

Or the fact that the original pic of her was when she was 12.
