Now boris... that was a different story. Micon was worried about that, and so was I.
In a bit, I will post the full story about how we reacted to boris, and how I found clarity about the situation from a very unlikely source.

Okay, so the boris situation... I've posted about some of this before, but here goes...
The boris exodus occurred in January 2009. This was BEFORE Donkdown existed, but AFTER Pokernews had bought NWP.
It's also important to understand that there had been a previous exodus to boris a year earlier, but Micon was able to calm everyone down, get everyone to return, and boris sat mostly dead for the next year.
Here is the timeline of NWP/Boris/DD/Tyde/PFA:
May 2004: NWP starts, owned by Micon & neverwin
May 2004: I show up to NWP in its infancy and cause it to become active
2006: I become a mod on NWP, but do not own anything
July 2007: Micon and neverwin sell NWP to Pokernews, but keep 12.5% ownership each. I am gifted 2.5% ownership.
Jan 2008: First exodus of core users from NWP to Boris, which was hastily set up as a forum on an old porn domain owned by phantom
Jan 2008: Micon talks everyone into coming back to NWP, and smooths things over with the aggrieved parties
Dec 2008: Shooting Off forum at NWP is "cleaned up" and the "dirty" portions are split off into a separate forum called "The Carter". This is a very unpopular decision.
Jan 2009: Vwls is fired as mod at NWP. While the reasons for firing her were sound, Micon did it abruptly and insensitively, and without informing me first. Since Vwls was very popular at the time with the regulars, there was a huge backlash, and everyone again ran to boris -- this time in greater numbers and with greater anger.
Jan 2009: Micon agrees to let me manage the forum, instead of him. Prior to this, I was more of a moderator and he made the ultimate decisions. Since the anger was at him, and I was relatively liked and seen as non-culpable for the problems, we figure that Micon stepping back would perhaps cause people to return.
Feb 2009: Above plan fails. Instead, the backlash turns against me, and everyone on boris is still dedicated to killing NWP and taking all of its traffic.
November 2009: Pokernews decides it's sick of NWP and abruptly closes the forum. They give us the forum and radio archives, and send us packing. We sell our remaining interest (Micon 12.5%, me 2.5%) in the site at a laughably bad rate, negotiated by Micon while I was on vacation.
early December 2009: Donkdown starts, using the previous forum database of NWP, meaning all accounts and messages are intact. The new site is co-owned by Micon, me, reggiman, and lakingsfan. Micon has the biggest piece, but not the majority. We agree that no owner has more power than the other.
late December 2009: Tydepoker starts
early-mid 2010: Tydepoker closes after someone tricks Marty into giving them the admin passwords, claiming they would send him $2k for it. He never received any money but the site was trashed. It was fairly dead by this point anyway, though.
Late 2010: reggiman sells his ownership in DD to the other 3, leaving me and lakingsfan with 26.4% each, and Micon with 47.2%.
August 14, 2011: The infamous "donate button" fight occurs on DD, where Micon and I argue publicly, and he claims that I was a negative to NWP/DD, and that it would have blown up huge if I had never gotten involved.
September 2011: I completely leave DD and sell off my interest for the whopping sum of $1200.
March 2012: PokerFraudAlert starts
Late 2012: DD becomes a ghost town, and ceases to have any kind of real traffic. This happened slowly, and not abruptly like the boris exodus. When PFA first started, the two sites had about equal activity/traffic, but PFA eventually sapped DD of its entire forum traffic (not intentionally, as I made no attempt to ruin/destroy DD).
I guess I got a bit off topic here. But that's the timeline.
I know I left some things out, such as Skatz, the boris exodus, venompoker, other incarnations of Tydepoker, etc.
But that's some history for you. I'll get back to the boris thing shortly.
Anyway, back to boris.
When the January 2009 boris exodus occurred, Micon and I were both concerned.
Simply put, almost all of the site's good/intelligent posters left. A few stayed behind at NWP, and a few posted at both places, but for the most part, it was an angry and dedicated boycott.
There was also a concerted attempt on the part of the new boris community to completely destroy/replace NWP. People were being asked/pressured behind the scenes NOT to post on NWP anymore. The few good DD holdouts (such as MaxDreidel) were being asked privately to come over to boris and leave NWP behind forever.
I was worried because I had seen this happen in online communities before. Basically, the owner of one community gets too bossy/arrogant/difficult, the core users get fed up, go somewhere else, and the once-thriving community dies.
I didn't want to see that happen to NWP after 4 1/2 years of existence, even if some of it was our own fault (mostly Micon's, but somewhat mine, as well).
Micon and I disagreed on how to handle it.
At first we were of one mind. The plan was to have Micon, hated at the time, step into the background, and I would announce that I was going to be in charge of the forums and would treat everyone fairly and respectfully. But it was too little, too late, and nobody was interested in returning, especially since Micon was still the main one in charge.
Then came the disagreement.
I saw discussion on boris that some people would still post on NWP, but only to backdoor-spam links to boris. This would get the rest of the people over there -- including the lurkers -- many of whom didn't completely realize that most of the regulars had moved over to boris.
I told Micon that we couldn't allow this. I told him that our only hope in stopping NWP from being completely replaced by boris was to essentially "quarantine" boris. We couldn't do anything about those whom had left (or already knew about boris and were considering going there), but we had to stop allowing them to use our site as a form of free advertising.
Micon disagreed. "That's censorship," he said. "I'm not going to disallow links to that place. We criticized twoplustwo for doing that to us, so I'm not going to be a hypocrite and do it to boris."
I told him it was different. NWP never attempted to replace twoplustwo. We were not trying to convince anyone to stop posting on twoplustwo and only post at NWP. We were not trying to destroy twoplustwo. Simply put, we weren't twoplustwo's competition, and Mason only censored us out of spite.
In the case of boris, they openly stated that they were attempting to build a new NWP, and destroy the current one. I told him we would be foolish to help them do so by allowing our much-higher-trafficked site to have links to the competing site trying very hard to replace us.
When I said "much higher traffic" on NWP, I was referring to the number of visitors. By this point, boris had more posts and more active posters, and definitely its quality of posts was much better. But it was still a relatively small group of people. There were very few lurkers. Nobody from the "outside" was surfing into boris. We had a lot of unique visitors but not a lot of good posters. They had a lot of good posters but not a lot of unique visitors. I told Micon that our only hope was to avoid allowing them to take our traffic (unique visitors), and to essentially render it an irrelevant circle jerk.
But I was still worried. Would we get new posters to replace the old ones that left? Would boris eventually get a "buzz" as the new, entertaining, free speech poker forum with much better content than NWP? I was afraid that the answer would be yes. They had all of the momentum. Everyone was unified with a single purpose. Everyone was enjoying themselves at their new home, and as much as I hated to admit it to myself, it was much better than NWP at the time. It was funny, entertaining, intelligent, and the site even looked better.
I lurked on boris every day, mostly to see what they were saying about me, Micon, and NWP.
When I banned the links to boris on NWP, that made everyone on boris hate me.
When I preemptively banned NWP users who announced on boris that they would be making their password available to cock-bomb NWP, everyone hated me more.
Soon I became public enemy #1 over there, and the impression of Micon softened over time. I was seen as the heavy-handed jerk, while Micon got to be known as just a goofy stoner who didn't really know what he was doing. I found it humorous that the impressions of us had basically switched, just because of who was currently more visible in making decisions on the NWP forum.
But then came the solution, and from an unlikely source:

I had a moment of clarity, and rushed to my iPhone to dial up Micon.
"I've figured it out, Micon. I know what to do about boris," I told him.
"Huh? Did something new happen?", he asked.
"No," I explained. "I saw a post by Marty saying, 'boris78 is a shitty site run by nobodies, with no theme, except perhaps soviet-era homoeroticism'. Marty probably doesn't realize it, but he made a great point. We have a constant stream of new users on NWP. People show up because they've heard of you. People show up because they've heard of me. People show up because they've heard of Dustin. People show up because our site has been around for years and has developed a reputation, and we are 3 faces in Vegas that can be attached to it. Boris doesn't have that. They don't have a single identifiable face in the poker community. It really is a site run by nobodies with no theme. They have a lot of intelligent people and interesting posters, but nobody from the outside will ever have a reason to go there. They don't even have a way to market themselves. They will never appear on Pokernews, never show up on TV playing poker, never break a cheating scandal, nothing. This site will never catch on with anyone who isn't already there. And the few new people who find it, they'll probably be chased off by the hostile-to-n00bs attitude they have over there."
"So what are you trying to say?", asked Micon.
"I'm saying that we just stay the course, do nothing, and stop worrying about it. Let them just exist over there and do their thing. We will keep up with preventing their link from being posted, and they'll be stuck with those same users for eternity. We will eventually get more and more new users to replace them. I see it already happening. The new people we've gotten aren't as good or interesting as those who left, but the bottom line is that we have the traffic from the outside, we have a constant flow of new people, and they don't. So we just keep it that way, and our site will return at least to some semblance of what it was. And then maybe at that point, some of those guys will soften on us and return."
Micon thought about it, and he agreed. So that's what we did.
Boris did thrive for awhile with the users it did have, and sometimes I was jealous of it. They had a real community, while we had more of a mish-mosh of randoms who didn't really know each other, and didn't really want to know each other.
But eventually NWP recovered, and then we started DD, which essentially was a reconstitution of the NWP which had just gone down, and boris had its own drama and split apart (where many went over to skatz), and boris became a ghost town itself.
How do I feel about the former boris people today?
I'm happy to have some of them posting here, and honestly have no hard feelings about the past, whether it's the distant past of the NWP/boris wars, or the more recent past regarding the stuff going on at Skatz.
Bottom line is that I just like to see the old-school community together again here to some degree, and part of the reason I do mostly "hands off" administrating here (with no mods, either) is because I want to mostly let the site run itself, free of petty drama as much as possible.

Also being paid were Vwls, Macon Marc, wrenchjockey, and Sole, for "moderating". Actually I'm not 100% sure about wrechjockey, but I know the others were. They all got $200 each per month. This was especially laughable for Macon and Sole, both of whom barely logged in.
It was also in 2008 when new Pokernews CEO Robbie Davies sent an angry e-mail to me, Dustin, and Micon, but accidentally CC:'d Jewdonk, believing him to be one of NWP's managers.
Robbie Davies hated me for awhile, and in fact I once did a rogue radio show bashing him (much to Micon and Martha's chagrin), but times changed, and Robbie now likes me and listens to PFA Radio sometimes. He doesn't work for Pokernews anymore, though.
I also received a modest stipend for my Fiction Forum contributions. But I cant really talk about that.

were you contractually prohibited from deliberately harming DD? not that there was anything to harm or that you ever would, but I'm just curious if you were remotely hindered from doing whatever you wanted (I doubt you were given the work you put in and how ridiculously low the buyout was).
