Why I don't automatically support Democrats

If you've read my posts here, you prolly know I am not a fan of the Republican Party at this junction, *and* would welcome Bernie Sanders being elected president. But don't confuse me for someone who auromatically supports Democrats or the left. And this HuffPost hit piece on trucking regulations is a perfect example.

Why? Because in an attempt to paint how Congress (cough, cough, the *Republican* controlled Congress) has been negligent regarding trucking safey by referencing two horrific trucking accidents, the author disingenously leaves out how these accidents were *completely* unrelated to the trucking regulations specifically mentioned in the article?

How so? In both cases, the truck drivers who caused those accidents violated rules that are *already* in the book! Adding the rules the article mentions would have done absolutely *nothing* to change the outcome of those accidents.

Here's the article. Read it, research the news stories of these accidents, and tell me if you think you can figure out specifically how the author is pulling the wool over the reader with the accident examples he mentions.

Trucks Are Getting More Dangerous And Drivers Are Falling Asleep At The Wheel. Thank Congress.
The inside story of how the trucking industry and politicians have conspired to make our highways less safe.

    1. Do you use a Logbook to log your hours?

    2. Electronic or Paper

    3. If Paper, how often do you "cook the book"? (fudged the numbers so it looks like you havent driven as long as you actually have, so you stay within the legal limits)

    Yes. I'm OTR.

    Electronic.

I could make more money working for a company that has drivers use paper logs, then books them on loads that require them to cheat their logs. I have no desire to work that way. The constraints of the regulated hours are a pain sometimes, but in the long run, they keep me from driving myself too hard and then get careless because of exhaustion.

    No, because...

    (1) I've seen how one of the rules discussed in the article (the repealed 34-hour reset provision) was fucking with my schedule in a way that didn't affect safety in an overall positive way (because it unintentionally encouraged most drivers to come out on the road around the same time during rush hour traffic).

    (2) Sleep apnea rules are abused by the companies that test for sleep apnea so that they can drum up business.

For example, I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea, and have to use a CPAP machine. But regardless of whether I use my machine, I sleep like a baby and dream a lot, something that people with sleep apnea don't tend to do without a machine because they usually can't get REM sleep. But because I am overweight, and would have to get tested for sleep apnea every year, it is cheaper for me to just use the machine regularly, and have my usage stats monitored periodicly to update my DOT medical card.

    ---

As for the drivers discussed in the article, those idiots broke the basic rule of driving while fatigued, which applies even if you have hours on your log to drive. The first guy who plowed into the cop *had* fudged his logs very badly and drove way beyond the limit per the regs. And the guy who plowed into Tracy Morgan's limo-van had driven his car for about 10 hours before starting his shift, then worked for over 13 hours after that before falling asleep at the wheel with the cruise control on.

Bottom line: Neither of those accidents would have been averted by any tweaks to the rules about sleep apnea or the 34-hour reset. Because you can't regulate away drivers out-and-out breaking the rules or failing to use reasonable judgement.

But they are sensational, and to the mostly-ignorant public, seem like cases where tighter safety regs would make a difference.

Snap! I completely missed that reference! Chalk it up to getting into trucking in the age of megacarriers and electronic logbooks. Because I've not even come close to having a "black dog" moment out on the road.

In fact, I didn't even know what "black dog" referred to until I saw this classic a few months ago.
