True story. Was a gang of us in Germany that included my dad for the 2006 World Cup... I'd been out all night and was just crawling back to the hotel mid morning. About 50 yards from the hotel was a cafe/bar were everybody drank, ate and played chess. I stumbled in for a final drink and ended up playing chess with some old Latvian cunt for 20 euros... He of course wipes the floor with me and everyone in there found it amusing that a drunk englishman had just been hustled by the best player in the house.

I took it well but in my drunken state told the Latvian that my dad would beat him no problem. He accepts the challenge then sorta dismisses me.

I obviously scurry back to the hotel rotten drunk to tell my old man there is a challenge waiting... He wasn't happy one bit but agreed to come back to the chess establishment and give this fuckers a game.

We walk in and the old Latvian is ready and waiting to talk numbers. I throw down 100 euros and my straight as a diamond dad almost collapses in horror... The old bastard snap matches the bet and it's game on.

The game was super tense and attracted the attention of everyone in there. In the end my dad comes out the victor after he resigned his king... We both go wild and get out of there sharpish while the old communist bastard is screaming for a rematch.

We both ended up staying out with that 100 and got totally smashed.

Is still the best day we've ever spent together as dad & lad.

My first and last chess story on these boards.

Sonatine, do you or anyone else want a game on chess.com or something?

I used to play quite a bit but I'm not that good, nor do I read up on strategy etc., but I'd relish the chance to play semi-regularly again and improve

Had a friend who i would play a weekly chess session with, he always beat me not to bad though. I won once but i pretty sure he let me win so I wouldn't give up playing altogether as i brought the joint for pre game.

He told me when he was young his father would play him and his two brothers at the same time blindfolded.....memorizing three boards with three different styles of play, he never lost. to bad he was a huge asshole that they haven't talked for years.
